School holidays

I'm quite senior and when through the bad days when the most senior person picked his 6 weeks and that was that, the carrot dangled to us is that when you went up the list you would get a better pick. I feel that there should be a form of seniority used but not as one sided as the past. Maybe two week slots top to bottom.
I also don't believe that school holidays should be ring fenced as what about posties in relationships with teachers.

With out seniority how do you control and oversee the holiday list's, how do they change year after year how do you know that it is fair and consistent, is it one list or they spilt up so drivers aren't off at the same time. It is to vague and open to people causes as many problems as seniority.

The main change that I have notice is that because of budget cuts there is no flexibility for extra leave over school holidays. Added to this there are less weeks available for staff to choose. For example, years ago the only weeks blocked off were the two before xmas. In our office its 4 weeks plus the week after Thanks giving has been reduced as we got battered last year.

Royal Mail really has to open it's eyes to this one, surely a child/family friendly company could do better. People will end up going sick .

The only person in our office to get 6 weeks during half term is the DOM. Maybe that's why he's not bothered.

Final point, we all have views on this subject just treat people how you expected to be treated yourself.

Just got my next years holiday request back today. Even though I am about 150th in line, I still got all the summer holiday I asked for. I was really worrying that I would miss out again but all came good.

First 2 weeks on seniority,next 2 weeks on reverse seniority then pot luck with any other holiday you might have,full timers have a list,part timers have a list and floaters have a list.I think up to 6 f/t 1 p/t and 1 floater of every week,then 5ft,2p/t and 1 floater off the next week,seems to work pretty well for us
