why all the negativity

just to confirm

the union membership in my office is at 92 %

the other 8 % are fixed term contracts and are worried there contracts will not be extended if they join the union

We all should abide by collective agreements otherwise we're as bad as management.

Given that The Way Forward Agreement says you cannot allocate holidays on seniority, how are you going to allocate next years summer holidays in your office Keith.
Isn't that supposed to be sorted by the end of Oct.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

[quote="keithposty"]why all the negativity

Because using seniority for holiday picks is obviously unfair & wrong.
Not withstanding against union agreements, but then pick & choose what suits eh.

The point is childcare is much more expensive during the summer holidays because obviously there is no school.
A junior member with children is doubly disadvantaged by the use of seniority to allocate annual leave by firstly missing the chance to spend a decent amount of time with them and secondly having to pay extra childcare costs.
Are you saying that you pay for childcare all year round then they charge more for the school holidays?

No. He is saying the kids are in school and consequently there are no childcare costs.
In the summer, there is no school so parents have to pay for childcare if they can't get time off during the holidays.

we have had the process of seniority in our, and yes, many other offices for many years and nobody complains and accepts this process.
we have a procedure that is that anybody wishes to change there dates for what ever reason, it will be accomodated in most cases.

everybody is happy, by the way the cheers went up this morning is testament to that

it is my job to look after the welfare of the staff in my office, union or not, what they decide is best practice. it is not for me,cwu, or royal mail to dictate policy to the staff (within reason)

we work in harmony as a collective for the good of all parties and have a good working relationship. i have regular weekly meetings with the dsm as he respects my opinion/

i may be a union man through and through, but also a human being.

remember

evils prevails when good men do nothing

so instead of people bellyaching and saying the union does nothing for me, use your vote, stand as a rep, make a difference

I think your find that after the way forward agreement , there was a further agreement covering annual leave section between Martin Collins and Adrain Delslo from Royal Mail. This further document allowed for offices to keep seniority and a lot of offices have still got these in place.

The annual leave section of the way forward gave two suggustions for annual leave , one was based on John Keggies old office and aother example.

However the agreement stated TWO EXAMPLES OF ANNUAL LEAVE SELECTION PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN ATTACHED AT ANNEX 1 FOR CONSIDERATION BUT THE LOCAL UNIT IS FREE TO COME UP WITH ITS OWN PROCEDURES , ALWAYS PROVIDING THEY CONFIRM TO THE PRINCIPLES.

The Way forward was agreed in January 2000. The Jointly Agreed Clarification on Annual Leave Selection Systems was agreed by Martin Collins and Adrain Delso on the 5th Novemeber 2001.

That allowed offices to maximise the first 3 weeks of all indivduals first choices for leave but still keep seniority on the first signing.
