Would love to watch this machine collate the cig paper thin d2ds we get every week! The machine would be jamming every couple of minutesdingo wrote:Remember bench merging is a form of what we used to do in Royal Mail before prep 2000 frames came. The only difference this time is that the first wave will not be sequenced.
Remember this is trail and it will either work and deliver what Royal Mail want or not.
The reason why D2D are not going to be thrown into a frame is that in the medium to long term they have now got the money to buy two collating machines which will collate all the D2D into the Uk.

How the heck can not putting the first wave tray of mail in a frame save 25 minutes? One tray, albeit the amount of letters per tray can wildly vary (I've experienced silly days where I've counted ~450, it really was a struggle to remove the first mini-bundle of letters from the tray, but these are rare), typically takes up to ~10mins. Outside Xmas pressure weeks, I'd struggle to recall getting at least 2.5 normal first wave trays.
At the moment, the maths behind this concept don't seem to add up at all, it hinders indoor and outdoor time.
Good old One Plan, trying to re-invent the wheel again, to justify their extra pay beyond an OPG?

In a 48 box.Spedley wrote:I still don't know what bench merging is? Can someone explain it really slowly to me.
Putting non-sequenced mail for the streets into their correct boxes.
Then sorting that box into delivery order.
Then take that sorted mail and add it into the sequenced boxes at the correct delivery point. This is where they get the name bench merging because you won't be putting the sequenced into the frame, you'll be merging it in either the perstop it came in, or the table your frame sits on.
This is a 48 box
History repeating itself

I have thought about this quite a lot (probably too much)
I work in a small office and we get 2 trays of sequenced. Everything else is manually sorted, roughly 4 to 5 trays of flats and another three quarters of letters including 2nd wave of non sequenced mech, 2 packet bags and half a York of large packets. The thought of putting all that manually and D2D in the sequenced is do-able but if they think it's gonna be quicker they need a good look at themselves. I've done 21 years and need to do another 15, it's gonna be interesting

In the trial they are going to increase the amount of sequenced mail on the first wave from 75 to 90.
So possibly 3 trays of mail. At your "approx" 10 minutes per tray that is 30 minutes saved.
But in my opinion saving time isn't really the goal.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It's almost as if the brilliant business minds at the top of this company aren't generating original solutions, but reaching back in time to recycle an old idea they think everyone else has forgotten about and giving it a dazzling marketing buzzword name. Mark my words, we'll be Starbursting yet.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:History repeating itself

They’ll be looking at a name change soon. Something like “consignia”

They can dream on if they think that they'll get 90% on the first wave everywhere, around 80% is realistically the best they can hope. @dingo how many minutes do they expect to save in scenarios where a batch has to be run twice where there's too much to run in one go? Which lot do they merge the wave 2 and manual into?clashcityrocker wrote:Trays of mail. Do you mean if the 1st wave comes in 2 lots, so you would normally prep the full frame twice with the 1st wave? If so im guessing theyd tell you to merge the second lot(probably the smaller) into the 1st lot then merge the 2nd wave etc. Into that. Doesnt sound like much of a time saver reallySpacePhoenix wrote:They can dream on if they think that they'll get 90% on the first wave everywhere, around 80% is realistically the best they can hope. @dingo how many minutes do they expect to save in scenarios where a batch has to be run twice where there's too much to run in one go? Once the SWW fully kicks in the amount of mail run on wave 1 will be cut as the CSS machines will start latercitypostie wrote:Do you mean if the 1st wave comes in 2 lots, so you would normally prep the full frame twice with the 1st wave? So where will the d2d opt out cards be sorted if frames are not being used? Or the hazard cards?
