You need to have more experience of private companies.

I get told to leave my regular work and sent out on delivery.
So who does your regular work? Someone must do.

If you'd bothered to read the whole thread you would already know full well that that's the whole point of this post in the first place.

When i'm sent out on delivery my own regular work is left.

I currently have 8 trays and 4 sacks of missorts to go through from this week.
The dead letters i sort and tray up haven't been touched either - that's for the whole office not just the trackable items that go through the RLE.

I've been sent out twice this week already and only worked 2 days (tues being my day off). If i'm sent out again tomorrow (which i fully expect) then the back log isn't likely to be cleared until well into January by my guess.

Start with a stage 1 grievance form & if need be continue onward with a stage 2 which involves HR & DSM level.

You are not alone with this particular issue.

Good luck.
A couple of years ago we put in a grievance over having our 1 in 4 rota changed to a 1 in 6. Took it all the way to level 3. Outcome was that we failed to keep our 1 in 4, reason being down to operational needs apparently. Despite a national agreement saying staff should be able to take more weekends off where possible etc. We didn't want more, we just wanted to keep what we had. Operational needs??? surely it's easier to cover a duty for the same 3 days a week than 6 ?

I may go down the grievance route, just to chance my luck. After all an inexperienced DOM who has never had to handle a grievance before might just buckle. If he doesn't and it gets to DSM, we also have a new one of those, who might be interested to know what a mess our place is in.

Actually if you had actually bothered to read his thread he clearly did state in his 2nd post on the topic who does his regular work, its left for him to do in the next few days

Redirections for the entire office not sorted and trayed up, left sitting there until i have the time to do it.
Missorts left sitting in the ips frames until i have the time to sort them and tray them.
All the office kill offs left piled up and falling all over the floor because i haven't the time to get to them.
Not collected kill off items left piling up on my desk because i haven't had time to do them.
739 items not booked in as i haven't been able to assist the callers office.

Today is my day off - my cover drives and is almost certain to be sent out to do some sort of delivery (often paid as OT) so all those above things will have built up over 2 days now. If i'm sent out tomorrow then it's unlikely they will get done before next week

I have worked for a few private companies, admittedly in the past & everyone worked their paid hours.

Would you care to enlighten me/us on which company/ies currently don't? (other than RM)Thanks.

In any business that has a finite amount of work/day there is down time, sometimes that's during the working day where staff may be idle and sometimes it might be at the end of the day when staff are allowed to go home.

The idea that Royal Mail is unique in this is absurd, no business is 100% efficient 100% of the time. It's possible to make Royal Mail staff attend work for all their paid hours but very difficult to give them productive work for all of those hours unless you change the business model completely. Ironically the closest we got in delivery was about 20 years ago when we had shorter days and the next days mail to sort after delivery, In those days it was very unusual if you finished early other than a Saturday.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Well Saturday was further proof of how ridiculous things are in my DO.

Indoor staff were left to do their indoor duties and not asked to go out on delivery.

Had a lot of walks on the deck due to sickness.
Delivery staff asked to do a bit more lapsing replied that as they were already lapsing they wouldn't take anymore - still finished between 11 and 12. Due to finish 13.30.
Plenty of walks haven't even thrown a D2D off this week, let alone deliver any - just say they don't have time. Despite finishing 1-2 hrs early every day.(eventually returned to MC).
Kill offs left in trays under frames for same reason as above (usually just left there for weeks, unless someone is on light duties)

On Saturday we had a OPG from another office to help out, 3 linos and the DOM all went out on delivery. One lino was even seen loading pouches of mail into his own car for delivery.
Most of the office had finished and gone home by 12pm.
When i left at 13.30 DOM was just about to go out on delivery.

As far as my job is concerned, i managed to clear about 6 trays and all the packets on the missorts. Still have 8 trays to get through at some point.
Kill offs still piled up everywhere, waiting to be trayed up. Someone actually trayed a few up - didn't bother placing on a york though, just shoved them on top of trays that need facing.

Oh well, same s**t another day tomorrow.

Ah yes, the distinction between 'productive paid hours' & 'attended paid hours', I should have in hindsight been more specific in my description rather than using such a generic term.
