That statement is starting to lose any meaning.
It doesn't even make sense.
You could just as easily say a union is only as strong as it's bank account,a bankrupt union is f**k all use to anyone.
Many things make a union strong but what makes it stronger is the quality of it's organisation, even weak members can be organised into a strong union.

Hands up, how many of you are confident the CWU can protect your job if you are on a third-stager?
I would feel more confident with an Area Rep sitting beside me than if I was sitting there on my own.
Only an idiot would go in on their own but I wouldn't take an Area Rep in. I would take in someone I could trust.
Everyone realises that it is better to have a recognised union than not have one at all but nobody with any sense trusts union reps on full time release (no matter how much jargon they use). Anyone on a Stage 3 should get proper independent legal advice.
I don't understand why people want a new union. It would be the same. Once you realise that you can't trust anyone who is not on the shopfloor, you know where you stand.

I would want someone who understands RM's Attendance Procedure.
Someone who had experience of arguing a case on behalf of a member.
Someone who knew what strings to pull and who might have a chance of trading favours to keep me in a job.
That would almost certainly be an Area Rep.
My experience doesn't seem as jaded as yours.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
My syphilis is now under control and I shall be returning to work on Monday. I understand the Attendance Procedure and I realise that my 3 week period of absence will trigger a stage warning interview. I also understand that it is entirely up to you whether you issue a warning. Please consider the mitigating factor that I could not attend work because I was too ill to get out of bed before making your decision.
some intersting responses some totally missing the examples at the top of the thread, a lot of fee paying union members feel isolated and unsupported within royal mail with none or limited contact with their rep so going for any stage 1/2/3 you feel as if your on your own anyway, there are alot of people that dont even make it to that stage and leave the poor treatment and little respect they recieve from across all areas of royal mail ,you can talk about local agreements and policy and deals they mean jack if your without a union looking out for you and your right to be treated fairly with a mutual respect which from my experience sums up the cwu. I have worked for royal mail for a little over 5 years ,my first venture into the service sector and it is so out of date its untrue , in no other sector or company ive worked for is the treatment of its employees been this poor royal mail are worst ive witnessed in nearly 36 years of working so what does that say about the cwu.
dont matter what union we have now, the damage has been done and now will only get a lot worse. remember we wanted a 1 delivery, so we rush round and get it done. then we wanted a 5 day week, nice long weekend every 6 weeks. we hanged ourselves and now r.m can do without full time posties
the path of my life is strewn with cowpats from the devils own satanic herd
