Re: How do you get it through their thick heads?
Every Rep has their faults, but most do the job as best as they can . As I pointed out before, colleagues need to look at themselves before laying into the rep . They aren't the ones to blame when colleagues cannot do the job correctly .
It's the same argument that gas been going on for years .
The Rep is poor ..
What am I going to do about it ?
Nothing, is the common answer .

Those thoughts are very novel .
However, you shouldn't criticise others for doing something you have no interest in doing ...

Why not?
He pays his subs.
He follows the union line and does the job by they book.
He's entitled to decent representation and isn't getting it.
Are you honestly telling me that that you have to want to be a rep in order to speak up about poor representation?
That's nonsense eb...and dangerous.
Like it or not members are the customers of the CWU not the employees.
They are entitled to their money's worth, they pay for decent representation, they don't pay for some useless idiot to take the piss out of them.

Members are not the customers of the CWU .
The Members ARE the CWU .
Where would the Trade Union movement be if everybody were apathetic ?

It's a funny thing that statement eb.
It's only really trotted out in a negative sense when there is blame to apportion.
In this case it's their fault their rep is crap.
The bottom line is the members pay for a service,if they don't get that service they are entitled to ask why.

A unit rep is only as strong as the office. The best rep is useless if s/he is undermined by his own colleagues.
The unit rep is only as good as the Area Rep. Without support from above they are pointless and cannot achieve perfection.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

This isn't really about the good reps which thankfully are still the majority.clashcityrocker wrote:The best rep is useless if s/he is undermined by his own colleagues.
This is about poor reps and the members entitlement to criticise them without being slapped down for not standing themselves.

Re: How do you get it through their thick heads?
I think it comes down this.
If there is one good member in an office and every office has at least one...he/she is entitled to top class representation so the argument of "a rep is only as good as it's members" doesn't hold water for that one good individual member.
Too many reps are too quick to blame the idiots because it's an easy out.
Custard is a rep's dream...but his rep is a nightmare...in his position i would be complaining too.

Back in the 80/ 90s when the 'savings' didn't exist , The reps job was a lot easier . Staff were a lot more unionised and the only job of the rep was IR .
Forward to today, the reps job is less IR and 'savings ' is a daily routine - with staff less unionised that ever before .

Re: How do you get it through their thick heads?
The management don't want u to it by the book , because theyre statergy is to break the union and they enjoy the apathy in union members. Until the big wig union people get out of the same bed the union will struggle to regain some credibility with it's workforce . We all except change that's the way of the world I feel it's become to m8ty at the very top union don't want us to strike neither do rm so it's stalemate and it suits the bigboys and I feel for the reps because theyre fighting a losing battle
