Re: One wave
well I think a lot of people will leave if it comes to finishing at the times being bandied about. a lot of people in this job joined simply because of early finish times, and being able to pick bairns up from school at 3 -ish. all that will be down the swannee if this comes in.wannabeek wrote:I think it isn't entirely fair to say that the only benefit of earlier deliveries would be that the postman gets to finish work at an earlier hour.
I don't believe I'd be alone in feeling extremely vehemently cheesed off as a recipient if my daily mail delivery came at 17:00 every day, which is what is being proposed for many people, it seems. This is a massive deterioration in the quality of service, and really not so much to do with the posties knocking off at a decent hour of day. That's an associated benefit in my opinion.
Whether the mail arrives at 17:00 on Tuesday or 7am on Wednesday makes no darned difference at all, so far as I can see.

Re: One wave
I think if you remember senior staff were able to get the easier duties that were set aside for senior staff on a resign. This was all stopped by new members insisting that duties were made more equal and with cwu backing and the age discrimination act this has happened.fishtank wrote:I think any deal that lengthens deliveries has to look at protecting our older members, it would be ridiculous to expect members to work into their late sixties and perhaps longer walking the streets for 5hrs+ in all weathers. Perhaps some kind of graduated reduction in walk length?
In the old days the answer was a job in the mailcentre, that obviously isn't an option now.
It's one thing to be old in some MC but trogging round the streets for 5 hours in all weather sixty odd is ridiculous.

Re: One wave
same can be said for people in their 30's & 40's, ive seen people of all ages leave as the jobs too much now you dont have to be old. If you put more on the young posties to make it easier for the older ones how will they be when they are 55 60? What job will they be able to do? Atleast many of the senior posties had decades of the job being alot easier & still get the easiest duties now through seniority (which im for) but a 50 year old bricklayer thats paid the same as a 25 year old one is expected to do the same amount! thats life! Only on royalmail has it been common practice for alot of guys to have easier jobs than others but get paid the same!fishtank wrote:Not really interested in whether people think it's "fair", I'm interested in keeping people in a job, not seeing them forced to pack it in because the job is becoming physically more than can be expected of most older members.halfull wrote:This could have worked years ago but now it would not be fair as even guys in their 30's & 40's are suffering from the workload!fishtank wrote:I think any deal that lengthens deliveries has to look at protecting our older members, it would be ridiculous to expect members to work into their late sixties and perhaps longer walking the streets for 5hrs+ in all weathers. When im 55-60 im 100% sure i wont be able to do this job as it is now, let alone how it will be, but i wont expect my younger colleagues to do more than me, thats when its time to leave.
The answer is to make the workload manageable for all! so if a 50 year old guy can do it so can a 25 year old and so on, its the workload thats doing the damage not peoples age or how did so many make it to 60-65 in this job years ago?

Re: One wave
If the USO continues as is but we get one wave of sequenced, meaning we start and finish contract hours later for most OPGs, I feel we need a much more bullet proof over-running procedure in place.
If we are not due to finish contracted hours on delivery until ~1600, I think the will to complete on overtime will go for many and most walks need this due to unrealistic workloads.
OPGs need a much better procedure in place with no come backs for using their right to finish at their contract hours time, less their outdoor 20mins meal relief if applicable. The current system is far from ideal with the way delivery has changed in recent years, with so much more internet shopping; more D2Ds; Delivery To Neighbour etc. making estimates on what can be done by "home time" (besides what should be optional overtime) practically impossible.

Agreed. This should be the union's No2 priority (No1 should be scrapping the whole stupid idea).IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote: I feel we need a much more bullet proof over-running procedure in place.
I'm not exactly happy doing overtime in the dark at the moment, with a duty based on 4 1/2 hr delivery. With a later start and an extra hour outside, I
definitely won't be going over, ever. I need the full backing of the union, and a better procedure than the current guessing and arguing.

Re: One wave
Everyone is falling for it yet again - every time we have major change something is released to makes us focus on it, this time it is 6 hr deliveries
Everyone is getting their knickers in a twist and saying no!
so what will happen is while everyone is focused on this other more damaging things will slip through the net and when it all plays out and we only get say 5 hour deliveries then much celebration yes we won! No we didn't 6 hour deliveries were never going to be a reality but by saying they are we are much more likely to accept an hour under and be happy about it even though it is longer than we currently have ( for some)
everyone needs to calm down and concentrate on the little things, those are the ones that are really going to matter
It's classic negotiating techniques and happens every single time and we fall for it every single time - promise something so horrific that all the focus is on it then give in on that while slipping everything you wanted in when they don't notice

What about annualised hours where you have to have an agreed set of hours
I think that will end the cutting off debate.

So you're telling me a 60 yr old fireman works as hard as a postman....don't see many postmen being paid to sleep on the job.Glenno wrote:pretty much the same as a 60yr old fireman reallyIt's one thing to be old in some MC but trogging round the streets for 5 hours in all weather sixty odd is ridiculous.![]()

Re: One wave
annualised hours will never work as we make no time in the so called summer slowdown, we go over all the time then aswell so if they shave anhour off our times all summer people would just be either a)booking alot of time or b)leaving alot of mail.motherhubbard wrote:Did you miss this little nugget from Dingo?IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:If the USO continues as is but we get one wave of sequenced, meaning we start and finish contract hours later for most OPGs, I feel we need a much more bullet proof over-running procedure in place.
