Dave Joyce letter after two die in severe heat
The summers are probably going to have more heatwave conditions going forward. This is a reason to put us all back on early starts, noone's life should be put at risk so a few more parcels can get into an office "next day".

Final dispatches from MCs to DOs are too late to make going back to early starts possible. If anything I can see RM going for even later starts as with the majority of Tracked supposedly going to the LAT offices, in many cases there'll no longer be enough mail ready to justify keeping earlier runs to DOs.eldritch1987 wrote:The summers are probably going to have more heatwave conditions going forward. Until it's safe to bring back van sharing (I can't see van sharing coming back until early 2021 at the earliest), the harsh reality is that some staff are going go have to be out in the afternoons

It would also be interesting to know when they faked the answers.
Did they do it after the death to try and absolve themselves of the blame?
Or did they do it early in the morning - and if so why? Would the Severe Weather tool have shown people shouldn't have been out on delivery in such weather?

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It would be interesting to know how many offices had any form of risk assessment done for the heat. Did any office likely to get the high temperatures see any of the measures implemented? I haven't seen the scales in our office for several years, no walk spans were reduced and temperatures of 35+ were recorded a few miles away.

An absolute disgrace! And condolences to the families. I've been banging on about getting sun cream and water for years, and was told by RM that they can't supply sun cream because someone may have an allergic reaction i was also told this by my reps on several occasions. They even tried to use this same excuse at the start of the pandemic when i asked for hand sanitizer before they where made to give it to all staff.

Why aren't DO H&S reps raising the fact that there's no scales? Even if there are scales, how many DO staff would even bother using them?fb1969 wrote:I haven't seen the scales in our office for several years
They probably don't want to get sued in the event someone has a really bad allergic reaction to sun creamgand wrote:I've been banging on about getting sun cream and water for years, and was told by RM that they can't supply sun cream because someone may have an allergic reaction i was also told this by my reps on several occasions.

Ok so because that person may be allergic that means its ok for everyone else to get skin cancer? I could be allergic to soap. But it doesn't get removed.SpacePhoenix wrote:Why aren't DO H&S reps raising the fact that there's no scales? Wouldn't know. The last H&S question I was involved in was the CWU Rep saying that I should wear the fluorescent vest over the fluorescent waterproof jacket as everyone should wear the vest - when I asked if the jacket was fluorescent enough he said he'd look into it and come back to me. That was about 5 years ago and I still haven't heard!SpacePhoenix wrote:Why aren't DO H&S reps raising the fact that there's no scales? Purely down to cost. Another health risk of working in sunlight is your eyes. Sunlight is a high risk factor in causing cataracts. We all should be wearing eye protection in the form of sunglasses or reactalite type lensesgand wrote:Ok so because that person may be allergic that means its ok for everyone else to get skin cancer? If the mail isn't in the DO early enough then we leave it and roll it over until the next day. I can't see OFCOM allowing RM to fail that much mail every day under any circumstanceseldritch1987 wrote:If the mail isn't in the DO early enough then we leave it and roll it over until the next day. I can't see any regulator having much say in anything going forward considering the global financial situation , their overriding remit is to protect the overall sustainability of the USO not its level of service.
Its sustainability is ultimately a factor of its cost so basically their remit is to see its costs reduced to a level where Royal Mail can afford to continue to provide it. That has to be driven by Royal Mail not Ofcom so the idea of the regulator having the power to allow or disallow anything is not relevant. The tail can't wag the dog.

The managers of these two offices should be charged with criminal negligence, and probably falsification of records in the first case.
