You are right there but even the handfull of people left willing to do overtime in our office are starting to show the strain as they are now almost pressured on a daily basis into doing it as no one else wants to know. It wont be to long before even they crack and give up doing it.

Wouldn't be so bad if RM offered a decent rate of OT, Say Time and a Half, that would certainly help those "needing" to work for the extra money. As it is you've got to put in a lot of extra work for only the Flat Rate (Plus 50p or so :thumbdown ). I'm not surprised those that put lots of OT in are feeling the strain! :cuppa

Did use to but the standard rate was crap like £4.50 x 1.45= £6.50 but it was a long time ago.

It's a wonder management don't have us travelling 60 miles to our MC to tidy up behind MC staff, we (delivery) staff seem to have do more of the MC work every day.
Manual sorting supposed sequence; sorting yorks of mixed tracked from ordinary parcels; cancelling stamps; turning half the sequenced letters the right way round because wally on the machine couldn't tip the tray the right way; and probably something else as well.

* "Manual sorting supposed sequence": Which wave? If it's wave 2 then it will be walk sort only - its only a matter of time before wave 2 is always walksort everywhere
* "sorting yorks of mixed tracked from ordinary parcels": Most likely been sorted by a packet sorting machine. Sepration by outward MCs is always s**t, large mixed in with small, small mixed in with large and Tracked sometimes mixed in with large and small (normal) packets
* "cancelling stamps": Outward MC staff have probbaly been told early on in a shift to stop cancelling stamps and just get it sorted and out the door. Probably as a result of staffing cuts
* "turning half the sequenced letters the right way round because wally on the machine couldn't tip the tray the right way": Once they've been coded upside down, they have to stay upside down. A iLSM or IMP maybe able to read the barcodes with the mail right way up (but with the barcode upside down) but a CSS will just reject it. btw if you've got a official redirction, it needs to go through the system as manual as a CSS will just go by the original barcode

Quite simply they won’t. This is the biggest problem the union face today. Many on here seem to forget that we’re not in the 70’s any more with their “let’s go out and stay out” mentality. It ain’t gonna happen, people have so many financial commitments nowadays and unfortunately employers know this so it weakens your arm in negotiations.

One or Two day strikes will have them over as the competition will pick up the work ie packets parcels wonder if the the CEO of RM has dual interests ie run RM down.

Is it even legal to not pay your contract hours (38 for FT opg's)? In the summer we may finish a tad early some days.not in my experience by the way.
I get the impression this is where we are heading. So any Posties who routinely finish early are going to find they will be losing maybe a days pay each week. The Ghosting will also end as well which will cause RM more problems than it anticipates. It really is going to be a hell of a disaster if they manage to implement it.

Royal Mail are investing loads of money in state-of-the-art clocking on/off machines because it benefits the business. But how so?

I don't think the seasonal variation of hours of summer and winter will work in practice because our working hours every day for everyone are different including our rest days. Royal Mail can't seem to plan a rota more than week in advance right now, so how on earth are they going to do this months in advance?? The only reason for a clocking on machine is the simple one - to ensure that employees get paid for all the hours that they have worked.

And this is the catch. Employees who leave an hour before their time could be pulled up into the office for possible conduct for leaving without completing all their paid hours. Just like when you have to notify a manager if you wish to leave loops of mail or do overtime; you could have to notify your manager if you have completed your duty and it will be up to them to decide whether you are allowed to leave or whether they have any more work for you. The business could also dock your pay if you have not worked your full hours like they do in factories. They say that they won't do this if perhaps you come in 10 minutes late, for example, but take all that with a pinch of salt.

It might be a bone for contention for some, the usual ones who come in early and skip breaks in the hope of "beating the system" but I don't think Royal Mail like posties who do this. And whilst the business does currently rely on the hours of goodwill that posties who regularly come in early and/or perform ghost overtime do, they may come a point when DOMs are almost forced to try and stop it.

Now its all well and good posties saying that the business will suffer for it. This is a business that is using PDAs, trackers in vans, and now clocking machines. They want to watch us every step of the way for their own ends. Posties who don't realise this don't realise that its their job that is most at risk....not the business.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
