We all have the democratic right to vote in elections. The problem is changing the established leaders. You mention what seemed like an organised attempt to oust or influence sitting officials at an AGM, in your own words yous “ nearly” caused an upset, but did in fact fail. A five year gap and no AGM ? There does seem to be a pattern emerging of the union being used as a tool for managing the workforce. RM go too far, RM want blood - workforce rebels ,big strike vote -RM and CWU drag out secret negotiations for months taking the heat out ,making workers feel far removed from power,then come up with a knobs and bells agreement of the century which both sides fail to enforce. It's a farce and we're all being played over and over again; and the only way to stop it is to get stuck in .
Many good people have taken on the mantle of being a rep only to fail against some old school reps who have much more influence at area level with other cohorts. Vote out your current reps! true but we also have a shortage of good people that have the urge to take on a thankless job in many units, prepared to put themselves forward for election, why ?
The amount of units with NO representation is testament to that. Until ther is a body of members organised and committed to change there will be no change, I honestly wish it were different.
Unfortunately most posties like to sit back and prefer to moan about their lot and blame reps, want a lot but not prepared to even support the union. The result is what we currently have, career union men who are abused but strangely use their position to abuse members by not representing their interests. It’s a viscous circle with RM the winners.
