Why tell them at all, why not apply for special leave to go on a round the world trip thats gonna take you 6 months.

Explain that on returning you would like to return to your job or a comparable job as i dont know if anyone could hold a post open for 6 months.

Not really telling lies, your on holiday, got your own telly, put it on sky and your all around the world, dont bring anyone back any pressies from holiday though. Might get suspicious if you give them jammys with arrows all over them.

If an employee is missing from work for 6 months or longerdue to a prison sentence, or whatever, he/she can legally be fired for 'frustration of contract'. However, if he/she can point to another employee who's been away for work for that period; say someone on long term sick, then his/her dismissal would be viewed by a tribunal as unfair.

As for dismissal for a criminal offence. The strongest suit management would have would be that the person was unacceptable to his fellow workers because of the nature of his offence, e.g. sex case, drug dealing etc and his fellow workers knew about the offence and objected to working with him. if the criminal offence was for dishonesty then management might be able to legally fire him by saying he'd been a danger to the safety of the mail.

This is not a simple subject and every case would have to be decided on its merits. (By a sensible management!)
