Why exactly do you care if the work piles up? You have a set amount of hours in which to do the work. If you are unable to do so, either claim the OT or go home. How exactly is it your problem? It is the management who will eventually get their balls booted when they are audited. So carry on, do as instructed and then go home and forget about it until the next day.Mezza wrote:Mezza wrote: All suggestions gratefully considered, but please leave out comments like just do your hours and let the DOM worry if your regular work piles up. Since working for RM, some 15 years now, i have learnt that if you want something doing, then best do it yourself. Letting the DOM, who really hasn't much of a clue what he's doing, sort it, will just result in a repeat of the issue.

Question who made the duty and did they properly assess it? Question 2 has any additions been catered for remember it is the managers responsibility to allow for this in his daily workload resourcing plan which should include a CWU official as planed the week before hand! So staff need to be trained and also the hour's captured into future plans.

Re: Looking for best course of action
The duty has never been assessed to my knowledge, but i've only been doing it for about 6 years.
Over the years it's lost bits and gained bits (significantly gained than lost).
There used to be 2 people in the RLE then they cut it down to just the one and took bits off the duty, the remaining one person had been in there for almost 15years and gave up and went on delivery(tells you all you need to know really).
I took over the duty and was ok for first 3-4 years, then new DOM, post revision added a 90 minute delivery to the duty - didn't think to add any time for tying up ect, so was really about 2 hrs. Nothing was taken off i just had to absorb it. meant duty failed every day in terms of my indoor workload.
Finally had the delivery element taken off and took over traying up deads and doing the misssorts - any remaining time at the end was always spent assisting callers with booking in items - made even worse now we have the SPS computer system.
As for any resourcing plan - forget it - it's dealt with on a day-to-day basis. As long as he can get everything out of the door then so be it. Our rep couldn't care any less if he tried - he has a cushy duty (actually puts his RM bike in the shared van and uses it once out of the office - only bike left in RM more than likely).
I stress i don't blame our new DOM. he is very wet behind the ears - straight out of Uni and a lino with bad habits who is leaving on EVR has taught him wrong from the start.

Similar problems in our office or not too bad at the moment. The two I hate are like yourself:
1) Get sent on delivery when other people have gone home
2) Get sent on delivery when you know other people are doing overtime within their paid hours.

Re: Looking for best course of action
What can/does a delivery guy do when he knows the guy next to him is finished an hour before him?
The answer of course is f**k all, same answer for you Mezza, nothing special about being in the locker.

When exactly have i complained about anyone finishing before me?
I'm sure i've mentioned the fact that i really don't care or have any issue in working to my time each and every day.

But you have an issue being put out on delivery when other guys are sat at home with their feet up? Same thing Mezza. You've spun it 100 ways over numerous threads but that's the meat and bones of it.
Bottom line is as the job gets harder for delivery staff (6hr delivery anyone?) that crappy locker job that you insist no-one wants (lol) will be a coveted prize so if I were you as long as its do-able and not a piss take I would be keeping my head down and worrying a bit less about what anyone else is doing.

Re: Looking for best course of action
There's not much difference between what you are going through and us on delivery. It's just slightly different.
The first few to return to the office are sent out again, anyone after this isn't yet on these odd days doms know we will all be early. Our rurals are supposed to have a longer day than us but we are kept to time and they are allowed to leave when they finish. (Often an hour early) NOTHING gets done. Ever. Dom couldn't care less and the Union rep couldn't care less.
Dom doesn't care that it's the same people being targeted all the time as long as the work is done.
Union rep doesn't care as long as calls are taken off their delivery and put on to someone else's whenever demanded
With zero support from anyone all we can do is work to time and try to ignore the rest. If needed I either cut off or claim over, depending on what suits me. If I'm made to do other things rather than what I should be doing then I refuse to work harder/faster to catch up. The shortfall is their problem not mine.
I'm not really sure what response you are looking for? This is how we cope regardless of whether you like the answers or not. You can either accept the situation or not, complain about it or not. In our experience nothing changes either way.

That's just taking a quote completely out of context.
The point i was making there was that i have to work to my finish time - i always have work to take me to that time.
Delivery staff are allowed to go home when they have completed their delivery, even if it's 3 hrs earlier than their finish time.
Who do you think should cover the delivery still sitting there?

No, it's not the same thing at all.fishtank wrote:But you have an issue being put out on delivery when other guys are sat at home with their feet up? Same thing Mezza.
Again i have no issue doing my work to my time every day. My issue is that if there is work to be done then why don't delivery staff have to cover it when they have nothing else to do but go home 3 hrs early.
I already have work to take me to my finishing time every day.
Why having failed my duty as far as the missorts and deads are concerned all this week, are delivery staff not asked to do some of these when they get back from delivery?
If delivery staff are asked to take some lapsing at my DO it can be as little as 25 delivery points, even it it means they will finish 3 hrs early.
yet if indoor staff are asked to cover a lapsed walk we have to split the entire duty between us.
Again, if every walk is covered and delivery staff are going home early i have no issue with that at all.

I don't have any extra?
I get told to leave my regular work and sent out on delivery.

I think the issue you are describing here is one of discrimination, basically you having to work your paid hours while others do not.
We are all paid to work our contracted hours, not paid per duty & I think this is the issue some have a problem understanding.
Also RM unit delivery managers still openly promote job & finish especially where delivery staff are concerned, yet expect indoor staff to work to their time.
I would hazard a guess that any private company would expect all its staff to be working their paid hours? Except for RM.
Start with a stage 1 grievance form & if need be continue onward with a stage 2 which involves HR & DSM level.
You are not alone with this particular issue.
Good luck.
