Delivering for 6 hours per day 5 days per week is unsustainable.

Makes no sense, they want more part timers 25 hour week , thats 5 hours a day.so how can a 6 hour delivery span be possible. plus if they had these new machines that could sort everything, they would have them up and running by now.

4 days of 6 hour 15 would give 25 hours. That still wouldn't work however as 30 minutes of that would be meal relief and perhaps as much again in travelling time to and from office!

And that assumes best case scenario, arrive at office, have ZERO minutes indoor work (ie walk is tied down, van loaded ready to depart).

So to make it realistic, for a 6 hour first to last letter delivery - you would require a shift of +7 hours to take in to account meal relief, travelling time and all the other ancilliary tasks (vehicle checks etc) and the inevitable indoor work that is still required. So not far off current fulltime hours!

Introducing new machines takes time, they have to do things like:

* Make sure there is the space for it
* Make sure that it won't overload the building's main breaker for the power supply
* Plan the sort plans
* The machine has to be manufactured
* The installation has to be planned
* They have to be trialled
* The larger XMS machines will have to be in place and up and running before the smaller XMS machines can be used

This isn't an either/or scenario, the only area that could support 6hr+ delivery spans is the only one that hasn't adopted the part time model, you can't have both at the same time and since Royal Mail's preferred model across most of the business is already part time that won't be changing. Where they do have a problem with imposing that model and the massive levels of inefficiency that having far too many full-time staff brings is where they are looking at different solutions like longer spans.

This is a local battle and while I don't mind personally getting involved you have to be careful, certain sections of the union want longer spans to protect some full time jobs, not the entire union and not all full-time jobsl and if your office is already predominantly part time whose full-time jobs are they trying to protect and where were these union heroes when your office got done in?

Depends how you measure it, but based solely on number of items delivered per work hour FT in deliveries are less efficient than PT because they work more hours.

Or a higher pay rate for all with similar hours 33 v 27 and in time more progression for partime staff and better holliday rates for the partime staff.

If you have an office full of full-time staff and your indoor workload decreases you have people standing about doing nothing, that's inefficient.

This is like a poll in the Sun or the Daily it bears no resemblance to the real situations

Let's take the facts as we know

1. Current automation in mail centres and CSS could from January allow all sequence mail to come into over 50% of DOs on one way which will be later than your normal second wave ! So the only in those DOs before 9 in the morning will be parcels and flats.

2. There is a trail in January of collating d2d.

3. More and more business are demanding later acceptance of mail but the same day delivery window. This means next , ASOS and loads want customers to order on line up too 11 in the evening and get in delivered the next day on delivery which is why Royal Mail want to have a delivery window of 10-5.

4. Royal Mail Strategy is over a 5 year period where with the purchase of large letter sequencing machines which was shortly trialled in Exeter will mean that deliveries will become an only outdoor delivery model with less DOs and no sorting frames.

5 of outside of that window will be that firms and tracked will still be delivered early.

6 Royal Mail strategy will mean a 6 day surface still.

These are facts . This is not about full time against part time as part timers in Royal Mail have various hour contracts , some work over their contracts now.

If Royal Mail moved torwards an outdoor model only and there was no indoor work only laying out you can or methods than how do you defend the hours of either a 39 hour contract or any part timer who works over 28 hours currently will be an huge challenge !

A letter to Branch's went out today concerning a meeting in Birmingham over this subject on the 16th December.

This is an huge issues which effect professional drivers , distribution , processing and delivery ! No decisions have been made and hardly any debate as reps and members are just getting the actual information.

The worst thing this site can do is try and put full timer against part timer as both will be impacted by any change.

No one is in favour of a longer delivery span but and is a but in 4 years time there is no indoor work for either a full timer of a part timer above 28 hours than what is the solution remember the difference in pay between a full timer and a 25 hour contract on a national rate with the current supplement is £154.15 less per week and £8000 per year.

What we don't do is go off half cocked and change the working practices of thousands of members.on the basis of maybe and might be, by all means develop a potential strategy, perhaps even a plan b but stop this scaremongering. You say that no one wants longer deliveries but that isn't really true, the whole idea of longer deliveries comes from the union not royal mail so obviously someone wants them.

If royal mail has detailed its plans to the union then the union has an obligation to fully inform the members as soon as possible and stop releasing unsubstantiated snippets through various sources.

Either HQ is s**t scared of the response or they're full of it and it's nothing to do with commercial confidentiality either because if it was no-one would know. How is Dave "New broom" Ward anyway? I haven't seen hide nor hair of him since he got his feet under the table..
