If you've got leave to take and they won't let you take it (it doesn't matter if it's"free" ) sit down and come up with 3 alternative dates that suit you (that's you being reasonable), put it in writing and slap in a request, if they refuse all 3 that's them being unreasonable so slap in a grievance, email uncle Bob and moya, go mental and bring the whole shoddy practice down.

I've been here 7 years and not been allowed to use my single days, I've got more that 2 weeks (in hours) to use, but am not allowed because the Dom can't get anyone to cover the days off I need, then again, all the part timers in my office has the same issue. Full timers never seem to have a problem. Got put on a stage 1 cause my daughter had to go in for an operation, even though I gave the manager notice, but he had to go to the football that day, guess my excuse isn't reasonable enough

Don't worry about your 2 weeks, I'm owed 6 weeks and many FTimers are owed more than that.......and all because managers used the holiday budget for savings.

surely it matters if that day is free is it not why its called daily leave at least that is how it is honoured in a mc first come first served. and then shift managers discretion for extra single days leave.

I'm January I requeted a day off in June, manager said , don't know what the staffing will be like in June so atm we are sticking with no, went to the union rep who came into the office with me and the manager 'with his tail between his legs' said he's got the day off that's why his name is down for it, the union man left and as soon as he did the manager said to me, just cause ur names down for that day off doesn't mean ur getting it off and I don't appreciate threats. Awesome place to work, but I'll try the 3 days thing on Monday

What is a grievance

If you have a concern, problem or complaint at work, you might want to take this up with your employer. This is called raising a grievance. You might want to raise a grievance about things like:

things you are being asked to do as part of your job
the terms and conditions of your employment contract, for example, your pay
the way you’re being treated at work, for example, if you're not given a promotion when you think you should be
discrimination at work. For example, you might think your work colleagues are bullying you because you because of your race, age, disability or sexuality.
It may be possible to sort out your complaint by simply talking to your employer informally.

However, it's not always possible to sort out your complaint in this way and you may want to take out a formal grievance. You don't have to take out a formal grievance. However, if you end up making a complaint to an employment tribunal, the tribunal may reduce any compensation they award you if you didn't raise a grievance first.

Visit the site I linked above it will help explain the process, but you first have to exhaust the internal system before taking it to a tribunal. Although I think you can register for one before then
