why havent i got my own walk

Well the only way to get your own walk is to

1. Apply for a walk everybody hated in the office
2. Cut your hours to part time walk
3. Wait for full revision in your office with a full repick.

I worked full time reserve for about 7 years and been there for almost 8.5 years. So it is very hard to get your own walk.

Good thing about not having your own walk is to different area and you only have to work in a crap area for one week (or one day)

Please can somebody tell me how my job works as a spare!

I have a full time contract and am a spare.. What I don't understand is why when I have covered a walk for a whole week I do not get the same day off as the guy I am working with? Also is it correct that they can change my day off the day before. I realise I may need to cover sometimes at short notice, but I an unable to make any arrangements just in case my day changes. at the moment I don't know what day I have off until the Friday. Is this just poor management or is it standard everywhere. I seem to have been conveniently given Christmas day and New Years day off. I get no long weekends like everybody else I thought the Royal Mail treated their staff on a level playing field. I have only been there a year I can see nothing in my contract saying I am a spare or will be treated differently to other staff because I am the newbie.

Get your rep on the case, having been a float/spare for the last 7 years I had the same poor treatment in regards to days off as yourself. You are entitled to 1 Saturday in six, like everyone else. Management always excused their inability to provide the requisite number of Saturdays/long weekends by using the mantra "your day off is the day off due on the walk you are covering". It was a load of bull as they'd change any Saturday that was due anyways.

As to why you don't get the same day off as your partner, maybe it's different in your office but we don't get the same days as our partners. otherwise there'd be no continuity, no one who would know what d2d had been done or if some other factor had changed during the previous days etc.
