New starters can be trained on procedures and processes on single or pair walks...

What tends to happen is a spare van can be used if there is one. So the new starter will work on a single round but do it in loops for later use in a pair. Or we have also used the bigger vans that can take 3 people...

But as soon as a new starter understands the processes, all he has to do is deliver the mail. So, yes, this is your bag, start here, watch out for these and we meet back here - it is really as easy as that.

The new starter (24/25/27hrs) does not do prepping anyway so he does not really need to know much about the frame...

Once a new starter has done a round once - he is half-way there. And for other rounds that they put him (same with regular staff), you only need to know and do half of each round for the first time.

Are we talking about "There's your mail now off you pop" training? :cuppa
If it's a choice between that and asking them to pop off on their own with a HCT, than yes. At least this chap wouldn't have mislaid his Special and more than likely wouldn't have left mail in his bags. I am of course assuming that the new starter is put with someone half decent. Again, expecting a lot.

I would be interested to hear what was said about the mail brought back previously without notifying someone. I would imagine there was some indication as to procedure at that point. The SD is serious but so is the mail left in the pouches not endorsed as to the reason for non-delivery. We all know people who have been binned for less. Mistakes happen but consistent mistakes can become a habit!

Ask them to produce your training record in full which will include:

*Record of being trained on the HCT, usually by the work place coach and signed by you, being made fully aware of the importance of correct operation, mail integrity and security.

*A fully completed training log done alongside the workplace coach who will have ticked all of this off, and again signed by you, which will for example cover the importance of clearing your bags of mail, correctly endorsing undeliverable items as well as the proper protection afforded to SD priority items

*Adherence to being on a fixed walk (where possible - which, in actual fact, is always bloody possible just the managers can't be arsed rotaring you in properly) for at least your first 6 weeks in order to embed your learning and develop an efficient routine on delivery.

I'm sure they'll have all of this no problem, right? :whistle

Lack of experience and lack of knowledge does NOT equal negligible behaviour or wilful delay. The route cause tends to always be poor training and the buck stops with the manager and workplace coach.
Managers need to accept responsibility for their own incompetence! You need a good rep on this.

It should not be a real hassle, there must be some patient experience posties who can take you on the wing for a day or two...

At least, someone on here has offered to help you... You now know not to make the same mistakes again...

You just need to know more about a few other common mistakes like using P739, endorsing mail if you cannot deliver, clear your frame, do your d2ds, let your manager know if you cannot finish well before you leave (alternatively, if you really want this job - just do the job, forget about OT or bringing mail back for a long while) etc... And always check your bags after you get back - inside out.

There is a separate part of this site dedicated to new starters (True Blue Terrier) - go through the threads...

There are posties that might swap their round for a day or two just to help. Only a lazy and vindictive manager will get someone fired so quickly

The problem is that Royal Mail delivery is so old school... It should not be difficult to produce such a training checklist document and give posties proper induction and training. Even watching a video. They have loads of documents which they do not use and sometimes they only just give them to you and ask you to sign even before you have read them.

It is a lot better in some other part of Royal Mail. Delivery is sometimes like working in a packing factory...

Workplace coach...rep...other colleagues...actually forget it.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The only people who deliver specials in our office are cdv partners and drivers. Its impossible, especially for a new starter to meet the 1pm spec on most days. It also appears that you havn't had decent training. Make sure you speak to your rep before the interview. Were you made aware of the 'cutting off procedure'? Good luck

Before you leave the office if you think you will not complete your delivery you must make your manager aware that you may have a problem. I have read your previous posts and it does seem that you have have had not much in the way of training. You should have been given a new entrants training record,if you haven't then raise it at your interview. Are you using a pda?

Yeh I use a PDA, so many parcels/special deliveries... this HCT route is a killer I think.

Since you use a PDA, they should have been able to tell that you actually tried to deliver the Special rather than trying to steal the item... They probably knew that and that was why you were not suspended straight-away... That is no reason to lose/mislay a special but we all make mistakes.

The post you did not get was someone being sarcastic. But what some of these folks that have worked a long time do not realise is that in 3 weeks, everything is still a blur to a new starter. And the issues of Union, Union rep, training, colleagues (that is a laugh) - mots of them don't probably know your name... You probably do not have a workplace coach - we dont' have one...

The reality, you do not all of a sudden called other posties your colleagues after 3 weeks - you are a newbie trying to stay afloat. Unless you are an extrovert and you have taken to the job like a duck to water.

Lastly, the sarcastic comment was uncalled for because you are currently suspended so who do you really talk to? You are probably not in the Union yet and you are out of the loop and clueless as to what is going on and what is going to happen.

Good night, sleep tight, tomorrow will take care of itself.
