They might have done years as a good rep but need to change.
I don't think they should be judged on that but on whether they are a good or bad manager

Re: acting managers
Unfortunately at Royal Mail their is a massive fence with us on one side and the management on the other.
This has been created over many years with outdated rules and practice and a sack you first approach every chance they get.
To cross from one side to the other is viewed by many to be the lowest of the low.
Most of the decent managers I have worked with have been ex posties.
The wrong uns tend to be the ones who have never done a delivery and just follow the RM bible "computer says you can do it" so why can't you ?

Oh and if you could use the quote button when repeating someone else's post it would help avoid confusion.

If losing the respect of your colleagues, having no moral's, being a liar, being a bully of the worst kind (hiding behind a shirt & tie), being an arse lick as well as taking it up there, is the price you pay to become a bitch robot for the business.....they deserve all the abuse they get. I'm not bitter or anything. KARMA people.

Re: acting managers
What about those that don't fulfil your criteria. We have had one bloke go into management and as yet as far as I know he hasn't gone over to the dark side, he treats me just the same as before with respect and he has never bullied me.makingsounds wrote:If losing the respect of your colleagues, having no moral's, being a liar, being a bully of the worst kind (hiding behind a shirt & tie), being an arse lick as well as taking it up there, is the price you pay to become a bitch robot for the business.....they deserve all the abuse they get. I personally would not go into management, despite being asked in the past, mainly because of the culture, but I think its unfair to decry every single manager, or those that want to go into management. Some managers are good, most are not, but i thinks its mainly down to the culture and lack of leadership at the top that we have such poor managers at the operational level, and if we can get more of the decent ones into management then perhaps the culture will change.

Re: acting managers
Unfortunately Teebs, culture is determined by those in power who have an end game. The best manager in the world coming into this business has no allies or cliques of same thinking individuals such as we have here on RMC, so they have no opportunity to change the culture of the end gamers, and generally end up losing their own ethos, as they are believe it or not human, and will revert to protecting their position rather than considering the poeple they are supposed to help and manage.

Re: acting managers
Management should never choose who gets promoted or who gets to 'act up'.
Only objective measures should be used. Attitude or behaviours should certainly not come into it.
There should be objective tests of comprehension and maths skills open to everyone and selection should be from the pool of those who have passed the tests, longest servers first.
No one would bother licking arse because there would be no reward.

That sounds really logical LC, so it's never going to be adopted by RM.LinChong wrote:Management should never choose who gets promoted or who gets to 'act up'.

Objective measures is / can be a good thing. To say that attitude and behaviours does not come in to it is wrong. Anyone with the wrong attitude or behaviour would not fit any management bill.
How do comprehension and math skills and then selection open only to the longest serving first, actually help the management process?

Royal Mail should take a far more professional approach to their recruitment, the days of a nod and a wink should be behind us but it isn't.
If you meet the criteria you should be interviewed and assessed by a panel of in-house recruitment professionals who it would be hoped would be able to separate the wheat from the chaff and for at least your first year you should only be allowed to manage outside your parent unit.

Re: acting managers
This IS how it is done, at least if the proper procedure is followed. In our area they advertise the jobs, anyone interested (haha!) submits their CV. Then they have to do online tests and if they pass them they get interviewed by a panel of managers. If they get selected they go off to do a course for a few weeks.fishtank wrote: Management have to choose but it shouldn't be local management.

Re: acting managers
If management in a unit are breaking every policy and agreement in the book and making things up as they go along, something has gone seriously wrong. The CWU rep should not be the only person holding management to account if they are not following company policy.
In theory, properly trained managers should be challenging rogue commanders. A manager should not be a Dalek that just follows orders. A manager should not be a 'yes' man remotely controlled by a Davros hiding away in an office misusing the security cameras to spy on everyone.
If you investigate a rogue unit, you will find poory trained managers whose relatives work as casuals, whose relatives work on fixed term contracts and whose relatives work on permanent contracts. You will find overtime Barons and you will find that substitution is by appointment and not offered to everyone. All of these groups have so much money at stake they will violently threaten anyone who attempts to blow the whistle.
Despite the current training and policy safeguards, there are units under the control of renegade managers. It doesn't help that characters who have always worked in the public sector are being required to adopt "private sector values". As they have no experience of working in a private company, they project a weird fantasy of the "outside world" which is more based on Daily Mail virtual reality.
It is wrong that authoritarian despots are able to establish their private fiefdoms in a Public Service. Safe Systems of Work are being ignored to increase productivity. People are being pressured into working over their time and bullied out of claiming overtime. There are no equal opportunities for promotion.
The system needs a radical change. Management should never again be allowed to choose who becomes a manager.
