Officially our break is at 12pm till 12.40, but we have it at the start of our shift as everything gets a bit manic, what with posties returning and customers on their lunchbreaks. We cannot cope alone between 12.00-13.00 so the late/early shift help each other out as we know we would'nt be allowed an extra bod to cover meal relief. I done the late duty every other week for over a year without this 40 min meal relief as I had'nt been given a job description and assumed the 'grace' break of 20 mins was my meal relief.dvbuk55 wrote:How long is the "grace" break? If it's 40 minutes you aren't working a full shift under any guise so it's no wonder he's working more hours than you. It seems more like an excuse to start your shift late.k66yla wrote:You get paid more than me SJ for less hours and I'm full time
We get a 'grace' break at 4pm.........if they got someone to cover it
In any case you should be doing the job PROPERLY from Monday which means 11.30 start and take your 40 min OFFICIAL break at 4.

Why would your official meal break be 30 minutes after you start and during the busiest part of the day, according to your post 1200 -1300 was "manic".k66yla wrote:My colleague and I do a weekly rotation 1 week early 5am-13.00 and 1 late 11.30am-19.30. On the late shift we have our meal break before we start, so we don't start till 12.10. Will the late shift duty have to go in?? I've a feeling the answer will be yes.
It would also mean you would be working from 1210 to 1930 or 1240 to 1930 without a break if the "grace" break wasn't allowed.
I presume you work in the Callers/Locker. I've done both morning and afternoon in the callers and the locker. How many actually work across the two?

There are only 2 of us that work in there, 1 on earlies, 1 on lates. If there is a big queue when I arrive I tend to go in there a bit earlier and then try to have 5/10 mins before my colleague goes home. I agree its not ideal, it makes the day really long having the Meal Relief at the start of the shift, but as far as management are concerned its 'out of sight, out of mind' as we are located a long way from D.O. and no one ever answers the phone in office. Its a complete nightmare if we've got a customer kicking off and threatening us, one occassion I had to press the bandit alarm and nobody camedvbuk55 wrote:Why would your official meal break be 30 minutes after you start and during the busiest part of the day, according to your post 1200 -1300 was "manic".k66yla wrote:My colleague and I do a weekly rotation 1 week early 5am-13.00 and 1 late 11.30am-19.30. Well I now have a more complete picture and there are a number of issues that seem to transgress H & S guidelines.
If you have an H & S rep ask him/her to have the work risk assessed - not least of all working alone without help close to hand or a check on your well being. And how do you go on about comfort breaks.
I too worked a similar shift and because of the fact that there was no-one there I couldn't take a proper break. So I would book a meal relief - it was never questioned because they knew I couldn't take a break. The early break is not the answer - you cannot work that long without a break. Have you done a Christmas in there yet?
You have probably inherited a long standing duty that needs to be re-assessed.

This is my 3rd xmas up there, it gets
we are normally allowed 1 extra person in at xmas as the excess pkts are stored in a conference room on the 2nd floor, very practical NOT!! I''m hoping other arrangements are put in place this year as running up & down stairs a couple of hundred times a day is a killer. Have spoken to H & S rep about problems, got a right b***ocking off managers for that

So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet

My sympathies.
Has the HS guy managed to have any of the problems resolved?
My advice,as always, is put your problems and reservations about the safety and practicality of the duty in writing.
Copy to your CWU Rep as well as the manager and the HS Rep.
Keep a copy. If and when a problem arises they cannot claim ignorance.

Hello Manager,cat got your tongue.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
