To be quite honest, your office is getting what it deserves because none of you have the initiative to band together and get this nonsense stopped. If the local rep is doing nothing, take the bull by the horns and demand a meeting with this manager. Get your facts together and copies of the national agreements and employment law, and tell him that unless overtime is paid, you will all be working to your time and leaving mail that you cannot possible deliver for his attention. To be fair to the CWU there is not much they can unless an office or an individual is willing to stand up for themselves.

After all no point in a rep telling the bosses that no more can be added to the duties when the manager can see people coming back or finishing early because they have surrendered their breaks or come in early.

There is little credibility for a rep when he says that drivers don't have enough time planned to do priority services, when walking posties are leaving the office with 2 or 3 bags and loading up their cars.

There is no point in a rep arguing that not paying overtime is illegal unless members either refuse to do any more, or put in a grievance against the offending manager.

Lastly there is no point a rep informing management and members that overtime is voluntary unless someone (hopefully themselves) is willing to refuse to do it.

Reps can and should always inform management and members of workers rights and obligations, however, at some point members have to decide when to take action. We can't always rely on others to do our fighting for us, at some point everyone has to take responsibility for what happens to them and those around them, or accept the consequences. Everyone has limits don't let Royal Mail find yours.

I agree with your post but......the CWU at local level and above must ensure that members who are standing up for themselves are given the full backing of the union.
Too many stories of reps not doing that for my liking,to be honest one is too many but it's my personal opinion that the problem is more widespread than just a few rogue reps.

You seriously need to think again, it is an entire office not a few. Since P&L was set up there are 5 duties , that is 10 walks, that are are too long by hours... not minutes. That's why they will not let us bring back mail or leave it in.

Glad I know this is not the situation nationally...and yes I believe the Area rep is well aware of what is happening. Our own rep said "Commit too Deliver" was compulsary, hence we are intimidated every day and working for no pay.

So be aware this may be coming your way faster than you think.

Wouldn't happen at mine either, our managers have stated quite clearly at WTLL that overtime is not compulsory and all they require is that we advise if we are likely to go over with an educated guess at how much so they can flag it up to the area manager before the sheets go in - where there is spare manpower available they transfer the work and if someone needs a culled walk they ask for assistance from staff willing to do it. There has been no lapsing or absorption on a compulsory basis since our P&L revision in February last year. Obviously there is the odd raised eyebrow about some of the overtime involved but they know it can't be done without us and a bit of goodwill and that is the route you now need to go as an office.

1,if you are told to take all the mail.you must tell them there and then that you will not beable to deliver within your contracted hours...Dom should then give you advice to help you..ie .stream the mail or leave enough that you can finish,offer you overtime to complete or bring back what is left.

2 he has a duty to write down on the daily log that you informed him and his advice..you have a right to read it so ask to see it before you go out. then no matter what,no matter how much mail you have left ,if your not getting paid overtime for it,you must be back 15 minutes before your duty end to do your deads etc...then hand it all back to them
