If the Rep is an complete moron then perhaps he should be challenged at the ballot box.
The Rep is and will always be a easy target.
In my Branch there were always reps who were'nt the best, but at least they tried - but some of these were in post for a number of years.
Fuuny thing was- nobody ever stood against them....

I understand your point and i'm not defending those who blame the rep for everything from D2D into workload to the coffee machine being broken but there is a fundamental flaw in the system that allows poor reps to stay in post.easter bunny wrote:If the Rep is an complete moron then perhaps he should be challenged at the ballot box.

It's called apathy and it is growing, voting members are decreasing, reps can stay in position by carrying the votes of a minority of "friendly" members in a unit, area reps can stay in position by mobilising the members in their parent unit, most of the time divisional reps and national offices are unchallenged, the PEC...least said the better.
It's an unhealthy position if,like me you want to see the best people representing our members.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Interesting fishtank, cos we have someone else in our office who wishes too challenge our own rep for the position, yet from the area rep was a no no... for some unexplained reason.I think all us members are intitled a vote,at the end of the day us voters if there was one would wish too pick someone who we trust and confidence in

The Area Rep has no right to stop any one from standing .andy prentice wrote:Interesting fishtank, cos we have someone else in our office who wishes too challenge our own rep for the position, yet from the area rep was a no no... for some unexplained reason.I think all us members are intitled a vote,at the end of the day us voters if there was one would wish too pick someone who we trust and confidence in
Secondly, the reason quite simply some people might feel Reps are slightly out of their depth is that nationally the position of the CWU is more and more agreements are done locally .
That puts the local Rep into a dreadful position where pressure from RM Management could easily overwhelm the poor Rep.

Too be honest Easter Bunny,i don't think whatever local rep we have will make much a difference as the real problem is coming from our own top.

Members need to help themselves . The Rep is not a nursemaid .
Members who come in early, sort Households at home or in their own time, take private cars out, no breaks etc etc can expect little sympathy from the Rep when RM start their round of savings.
As soon as the word 'savings' is mentioned , the militancy in the staff start to show for a while then soon as the savings exercise has been completed, most go back to their old ways .
When SDD was brought in , the CWU should have insisted no private cars and everybody returns back to the office to sign out .
Half the problems of today could have been solved many years ago...

I'm hoping I can make a difference in our office. Previous revisions have been pushed through by management rather than the members due to lack of information from rep to us all. Some of the treatment staff have received from management is disgraceful and I'm hoping to put a stop to that as well. Not gonna promise everything will be perfect but hope after 2 years members will look back and say "he did a good job to the best of his ability".

I personally feel when I started in rm the union was strong and the workers were united , now as some people have said there's apathy in the members and to be fair alot can't be bothered about doing there job right , I've always refused to use my car in any weather as a point of principle , we've made it far to easy for rm it's in black and White what time people r finishing. I'm sorry to say where we are now asbeen down to us workers , members should have listened to rthe union in our office not using private cars lasted a day a ban on overtime lasted a day . Not coming in early never happened . The members need to take a long look at themselves and I believe the selfish few have ruined it forthe rest of us

Office is full of apathy due to 2 out of the last 3 reps going into management. We have plenty that come in early, throw d2d's in from in their own time, dont take breaks etc etc. Probably only 70% of office are in union. How does a new rep get people to realise that doing the job properly is in everyones interest for the future.
but theres your point
no doubt under the last 2 reps, any staff working their hours etc got no support
so now after all that someone starts telling them to do X,Y & Z
In all my time at RM we have never had a decent rep
If I was staying in RM I would have went for it,however when I can Im out of here
plus ironically, you need a decent relationship with managers
'We have never had a decent rep'
Why haven't you stood for the position ? Perhaps you shouldn't criticise others if you haven't got the bottle to do the job .
hmm, seems you dont read to well

Re: How do you get it through their thick heads?
Everybody has been guilty of it over the years . Who actually completed their D2Ds on the 2nd delivery ? Who refused to clear down after the cut off on the 1st delivery to protect the 2nd ?
I can remember many times when colleagues went straight home after the 1st ( myself included )
It still feels as if staff have a god given right to finish an hour early . If the problems of yesteryear had been addressed earlier, the job would be a whole lot easier ...

You had many years in the job to stand as rep if you say you have never been represented correctly.
It seems many people have lots of excuses not to stand for election - yet are the first to criticise others who put their heads above the parapet ..

SDD-Job and finish-CWU-Hook line and sinker. If the problems of yesteryear had been addressed earlier,
All hail Allan Leighton for his masterstroke.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I do remember when Leighton backtracked on that when it was reported how much time staff were making .
He would have said anything at the time to get the SDD agreement accepted . However that was then , this is now ....

how many years have I had?
I have never had an intention to stay at rM
so try again and see if you can string a relevant rely together
you answer is if you have a (string of) poor reps, then its your own fault if you dont do it
