Divisional reps

Perhaps the role of Divisional Rep is too complex now dingo.
Perhaps more delegation of responsibilities is required to allow more time to actually engage with the membership more.
Perhaps a more hands on approach by some divi reps would at least help the members to feel engaged more.
Maybe it's the role of others in the union that needs looked at.

I think the members need to decide what role they want their Divisional Reps playing in the "big picture".
I think that's definitely a debate worth having.

It's easy for others to criticise about the role of the divisional rep , but if you do the job probably then it is a hard and stressful job.

We were all at Headquarters yesterday , in my division we are dealing non stop on the mail centres issues both on the operation , quality and people's issues, we have to deal with all the revison issues which cannot be resolved , including all the FTC, the walk sequencing and MPU sites , we deal with network , CIT , ROMEC , Quadrant reviews , RDCS. on top of this we deal with members with problems , appeals, members with pension issues , resolve problems involving reps, in addition we are dealing with the changes to PSP , we produce comms and organise a number of processing , delivery and distribution meetings.

Whilst London is easy to get about in ,we also have to meet the Thames Valley region who are based in Swindon a fair bit or Oxford.

Other Divisions have far greater distances to travel like the North West /North Wales division or South Wales and South West Division.

London covers 120 delivery offices , 15 collection hubs , 3 mail centres , 2 RDCs , 4 Vocs , 2 CIT units, one airport hub. Not asking for tears or pats on the back but to criticise a role you have to first understand what they role does.

That sure sounds a lot of responsibility Dingo. Just as well Royal Mail pays you well.

Fish it does depend who is doing the role and where they are doing it. myself on average visit the mail centres once if not more than once per week especially the Mount. In deliveries I have visited 4 different offices in the last fortnight and have held membership meetings in two and walked around the others talking to Indivduals.

I will on average visit about 10 different delivery offices per month and depending on whether I am dealing with a stage 3 or a revision issue or an indivdual issues maybe more. There is no office in London where I have not been too including the House Of commons at some stage. Now another important role of a divisional rep is to attend committee meetings of the local reps of the branch and to both listen and to give them an update on things.

So I do believe in the Division I represent we do try and get closer to the members and whilst it helps our geographical background , there are other divisional reps who like to meet the members. However you have to remember some Branch's and area reps are proud of their roles and don't always want divisional reps or for that matter PEC members getting involved in issues which they are intially in charge of.

i must agree with dingo

we have an active branch and prefer to deal with problems in house through our area reps if local reps need support

they are only a phone call away

its nice to know we can call on div reps but they have more important issues to deal with and they will pass any info down the line via an LTB

if a div rep is needed, our area or branch secretary will call on his/her services as we thrash out our own problems at our monthly section meetings and central committe meetings

I saw mine not long ago when he came to ours to try and get me to drop my case.
He even admitted that it was the first time he had ever been here.

I'm in a Scottish mail centre so i have been told by my area rep that the div rep for Scotland is only covering 3 mail centres as the another div rep takes care of delivery so he has plenty time to visit us and deal with grievances that the area rep has sent to him as he can't get them resolved.In my opinion he should be more visible to our members.

I think that's a great idea fishtank and i will be bringing that up at my branch AGM in February.
I hope others do the same..
