Talell,

I was on the PEC as an observer and I was only allowed to speak on issues that were specifically youth related, If I spoke on something that wasn't youth related then I was slapped down by the Chair. This was very frustrating because when I attended the NEC I was allowed to talk on all the major political debates, I can only conclude that the PEC don't want the same level of open debate on their committee. Again the procedures on the PEC are straight out of the last century and this prevent open debates, this has to change. These are some of the reasons why I wanted to stand.

I tell you one thing I spoke up against was executive council pay. When Dave Ward was suggesting that the union looks into the package that EC members get and improving it e.g. paying them more money than the people the represent. I was the only person on the committee that spoke out against it, How can we be a more independent trade union if our senior reps are taking more of Royal Mail's money? I think it was wrong that as an observer there only to talk about youth issues, that I was the only one to raise concerns about this.

We need some new faces on the PEC to freshen things up, the longer you're on there the more comfortable you get and some of them have got comfortable.

Regards

Is that a Royal WE  as I am one postie that does not want Saturdays to go, the price is too high, and they will come for more. Also to be honest there are issues of more importance than Saturdays off.

For instance:

Institutional B&H not being tackled.
Un-agreed standards being applied.
Incorrect use of IWT, Pegasus etc.
Lack of Managerial Training especially in people skills- (which I know the CWU can't do much about but they can apply pressure)
Unfair workloads.
Lack of clarity on agreements.

and for the Union we need people who will tackle

The apathy and disengagement of ordinary members (not improved by the period between the suspension of strikes and the ballot result)
Communication - not the lack of it but the style and processes. In my opinion we do need to improve information to members from HQ, not to bypass branches, but to make it more accessible and more relevant.

However I do wish any candidate who posts on here (and those who don't) the best of luck.

Belle Smith,

I wrote a blog on the BT 2010 and beyond agreement on the youth website as the agreement was going out to ballot. This was ordered to be taken down by the postal department, again a another sign of there unwillingness to have or fear of open debate.

My blog from 2010- Reading it again after almost two years, I would say I was wrong on the bit about members in Mail Centres that are under notice of closure having a chance to save them which is unfortunate really.

Kye Dudd - 2010 AND BEYOND The Winners and Losers

The National Agreement was published earlier this week and I think it is very important that CWU young members express their views on this purposed new agreement. We are the future of the postal industry we are in it for the long haul so it is vital that our views on the industry we want to work in are taken into account. I hope this Blog will open up and stimulate debate.

The first thing that strikes me about 2010 and beyond is that the agreement is unbalanced. There are many elements to the agreement that are acceptable and in many cases there will be winners that will emerge from this agreement. If you work in an RDC or Mail Centre that doesn’t close then I would say that you are a winner because you are getting a pay rise which is reasonable in comparison to what is going on in the wider economy and the public sector. This is in exchange for relatively little change.

Even if you work in a mail centre or RDC that has the prospect of closing I think you maybe able to just about stomach the deal. The agreement allows you to influence closure plans from the very earliest stage and provides a frame work that enables the CWU locally to put forward counter proposals and alternatives. MTSF has been maintained and improved in the case of excess fare payments. So if the worst thing happens the exit package is in place.

The big losers in this deal are members that work in the delivery function. Many members will face a pay cut in real terms in the first 2 years depending on the number of delivery points you have and the number of D2D that you did prior to this agreement, I never imagined I would see this from the CWU. If you have a season ticket for you football team you can rip that up or if you play football you can hang your boots up because last letter on a Saturday will now be 1500. I feel that the CWU have missed an ideal opportunity to move to complete Monday-Friday duties on delivery with Saturdays being covered by Part-timers or on overtime. Such an opportunity may not come along again for a very long time.

What is actually likely to occur is that delivery members will be out-voted on their part of the agreement by those working in other functions.

If the agreement in delivery is as good as is being said then why can’t it just be voted on by delivery members?

On top of this no national standards have been agreed on what is a fair work load or delivery span and this part of the agreement seems to be at best incomplete.

The Union has in my view gone backwards on this agreement to a time when winners and losers was a regular feature in national agreements as Members with lot more service than me have told me about.

Danelectro,

Can you give me a few more details about things being shoe-horned in? I might be able to give you a better answer.

I'm glad to hear that you'll try to do something about the "secrecy clauses", and the often poor communication too. Being told to remove your Blog is a perfect example of the problem with these clauses. The more people with your attitude we can get on the NEC/PEC, the better our chances of changing the current "cloak and dagger" approach to negotiations, and repairing some of the damage done by it.

Kye thanks for the reply

there are countless threads on RMC that tell of good local reps being sidelined by
area and div reps that are only too keen to agree to 100 to BSI and give the go ahead to revisions while dismissing
local reps concerns, this happens in my area and especially at stage 3 disagreements.

The reply you gave to belle smith clears up your position on BT2010 a little and does highlight why this agreement
needs to be stopped in its tracks until major concerns over achievable workloads have been sorted out which
dosnt seem to be an urgent matter for HQ.

These are the points i was trying to raise but i noticed true blue terriers post above put it across far better than me.

And what did you do about that? Did you report it to the YAC and the national youth officer (Simon Sapper, and for a period of time Graham Colk)? did you bring it up to the NEC? did you talk to the vice-chair of the YAC (Jamie Jenkins) about what it was like on the TFSEC? Why did you not submit a motion to conference (youth or general) since it is an important issue with regards to the youth movement in the union.

Did you do any of the above at all? I may seem critical, but I want to know if you are all talk about change, but unwilling to do anything about it.

However, it sounds like I'll have an interesting conversation with Dave Chivers at the next NYEE (if i ever remember to put my form in :silenced ).

ala MP's expenses.

However, I think there will be a motion before conference next year for industrial executives committee meetings minutes to be circulated via LTB if any of this is true.

At least I hope it is, because my suggestion is something completely different.

Hello Kye,

If you could do something for the members who work for POL, it would be appreciated.

It seems like the Union have made an unwritten agreement to let management break policies to support the New Labour / Tory objective of cutting costs to reduce the Network subsidy. There are grades in POL that are disgustingly underpaid. All POL workers have taken a pay cut in real terms since 2007.

What are the thoughts on the letter from Dave Ward. I got to middle of page 2 and got bored so if anyone can tell me what it means would be good.

Talell,

The answer to your question is that the people you mention were aware of how the PEC interpret the roll of the YAC chair on the committee, ask Ralph Ferrett it was the same for him. TFSEC treated their chair/vice-chair completely differently I am told that Jamie Jenkins was allowed to make a full contribution. The cultures of the two committees are different and the reality is that the only way you will start to change the culture is by getting new people on the PEC.
