No canvassing for votes that's strange. I'd want to vote for someone who has the passion and get up and go to go looking for votes at least you'd know they would be vocal in meetings and you would know what their position generally is.

Was there a reason for this rule.

ok then, just put their election addresses on here and let us all discuss the merits and downfalls . . . . together we can work out where the best options lay and decide for ourselves

I don't know what the original reason for that was - goes back many years.

I'd guess it would probably be to make for a level playing field.
A candidate with more resources such as political or employer(?!) backing
would be able to get their message across better and have an unfair advantage.
