The thing that gets you fit is cardiovascular and that only happens when you heart rate increases, so unless your heart is racing on your walk, your not gonna get really fit.
But you could try run round your walk that will sure get you tip top..

Im the exact same and im meant to be on a diet. I eat like a bastard when I finish a shift!

ATOS Dr reckons I've got tennis elbow in my knee  you could'nt make it up
Some of the guys(F/T) in my office do 2nd jobs after they've finished, I don't know where they get the energy from.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

far be it for me to support ATOS but tennis or golf elbow is an official medical term for this type of injury in both the elbow and knee!

My previous job involved lugging around and lifting a lot of heavy gear all day on 10 hour shifts starting at 3am. I'd been doing this for 5 years, my back and (tennis) elbows were f..ked to the extent I frequently had to take days off just to lie on a floor for 16 hours, and the place was basically driving me bonkers. Falling into bed at 7pm for 5 years!? :d'oh!

This job's done wonders for me. I think the 'compression' on my spine combined with the long stretches of walking without too much bending and lifting holds my spine in place. I was already a dog walker so my legs never really suffered anyway. Haven't touched a painkiller in 18 months now :dance

I'm crippled. Two sore feet, both ankles, both knees, and a hip/groin pain today...

I was pretty overweight when I started, and haven't lost a pound (despite sweating BUCKETS). I'm starving all the time, so eat twice as much as I used to.

After two years of this I need a desk job.

When I started the job I was 110KG before and I did gym as well, I drop down to 89 kg and now with lot more muscles I am now am at 95kg (no more gym). It is hard to shift the weight. I have taken up Salsa dancing and it is great fun. Shame about early start and late nights. Some days I got lot of energy and some day I have no energy. ARRGGHHH I think my knees is feeling the effects. I got sore right shoulder as well but it is related to gym injury which never healed 100% despite physiotherapy. I hate throwing in the walks too much.

Until September I was a walk man for just over 19 years, with the odd week or two of driving thrown in each year. I used to suffer with my knees when I had a walk which involved delivering to 70 flats (nowhere near as many as some walks!) because of pounding up the stairs with a heavy bag. When SDD came in just over five years ago, I signed for a walk with no flats and the knee problems went. I can still hear them click slightly when I climb stairs, but I don't get any pain.

I sprained my left ankle quite badly back in 1992, and it gave me bother ever since. Swelling up for no reason, very easy to 'go over' on, etc. About 18 months ago, I went over on it again and tore the ligaments. The strange thing was, after a couple of days, it didn't hurt. I got it checked out by my GP as a matter of course, and expected him to say go back to work next week (I think I did it on a Thursday). To my surprise, because by this stage I wasn't in any pain, he told me I needed to take at least another week, because if I didn't I WOULD go over on it again and I WOULD do more damage. My DOM referred me to ATOS, who did an over the phone diagnosis! The nurse backed up what my doctor said - stay off for a couple of weeks, go back on light duties for a week, and on the second week do a little more of my walk each day. It worked a treat, and touch wood, my ankle is better than it has been for years.

One of my motivations for signing for a driving job was to do less walking and less carrying of heavy bags. I still do about an hour's worth of walking each day, which I don't mind because it helps keep me fit. I do worry what sort of condition my joints are likely to be in by the time I retire. If I get that far...

Agree here  I once wore a heart rate monitor very good one new top of the range polar, it displays current heart rate as you wear the strap around your chest also displays calories as you type in your weight

I was average 300 calories per hour with my walk, my heart rate never went much above 120 - 130 mayby going up a hill!

Now that I am no longer a walking postie I am not as hungry, I have to go to the gym 4 times per week minumum and run at least 4 miles each visit with a bit of cross training as well.

Heart rate to improve fitness must work at 80% of max heart rate, to work that out you subtract your age from 220, so say me 220-34=186 max heart rate so to improve my fitness i would need to be working at around a heart rate of 150ish

Ha Ha "eat like a bastard " sums it perfectly!!
I actually lose weight when i'm off work on annual leave... its the only time i get to eat sensible healthy meals.
As soon as i'm back in work the belly re-appears.

having worked for over 20 years as a postie i would like to know if anyone has successfully been able to prove for medical purposes that the job has been found to be the reason and cause for their aches pains and overall health problems which meant them having to leave the job. Also were they successfull inputting in and winning a claim agains royal mail. Any feedback gratefully received. :
