Just ask your Branch Sec for an opt out form. They'll soon get the message at HQ. Don't expect them to agree with you. After all, Billy might want to be Leader of the TUC one day.sammysammy wrote:So what to do all about this then? How about we start something like asking the CWU to stop any money passed on or we all e-mail the CWU to ask now why any money at all is passed?

It is only about 10p per week, but I don't pay it on principle just the same as I wouldn't fund the Tories, the BNP, the KKK or anyone else who sh***s on the working class.sammysammy wrote:Can anyone tell me if they have talked to the reps about money going to Labour?have you asked to stop paying this money? when this came up at a past conference there was a huge debate and hq won the debate by saying we needed to keep our influence inside the party and at the time i agreed with that decision but now am really regretting it
it seems that i was wrong
maybe gordon will prove us all wrong
time will tell
but i know one thing if the labour goverment ignore or shaft us in our current troubles then i be withdrawing my political levy as will others

It sounds like a reasonable argument for remaining in membership or for paying the levy, but the history of the Labour Party, even before Blair, is one of a constant drift to the right and people like MacDonald, Morrison, Bevan, Gaitskell, Prentis, Owen and Blair have always prevailed against Lansbury, Bevin, Skinner, Benn, not so-Red Ken.biggazza wrote:when this came up at a past conference there was a huge debate and hq won the debate by saying we needed to keep our influence inside the party and at the time i agreed with that decision but now am really regretting it

A party which contains middle-class, priveledged oafs like Atlee, Blair, Brown, Harmon, Straw, Meacher or Campbell can't be expected to look after the interests of our class.

Hayes said at our AGM that Labour put in their manifesto that RM will not be privatised, because we help fund Labour.biggazza wrote:when this came up at a past conference there was a huge debate and hq won the debate by saying we needed to keep our influence inside the party and at the time i agreed with that decision but now am really regretting it

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Brown indicates break with unions, taking away union block vote and the right to table motions to conference. Well that it then. To all those who said stay with labour, its been 10 years and still nothing. Just the same s**t as under the tories.
Tory boy joins Labour enough said. Labour is the new tory.
Lets leave them to lose the next election and try with other unions to form a political party that is actually for the workers.

Have already emailed the union giving my point of view on the subject. Financing the Labour party should stop immediately. Explained why I think so, that we are being destroyed by a party/ government and not allowed to compete fairly. Not sure if it did our cause any good, but made me feel a whole lot better afterwards!sammysammy wrote:So what to do all about this then? How about we start something like asking the CWU to stop any money passed on or we all e-mail the CWU to ask now why any money at all is passed?

I saw an article in Socialist Worker which said that conference voted to ballot members next June as to whether they want to keep the affiliation to the Labour Party - http://www.socialistworker.co.uk/art.php?id=11831biggazza wrote:when this came up at a past conference there was a huge debate and hq won the debate by saying we needed to keep our influence inside the party and at the time i agreed with that decision but now am really regretting it

I have not seen anything in the Voice about this. Can anyone who was at Conference give us any more info?
As to paying the Political Levy, the problem is that only 2p of the 10p goes to the Labour Party. Another 2p goes back to your Branch as the Branch Political Levy Rebate which your Branch can use for affiliation to Labour Constituency Parties, donations to political campaigns, or for political campaigning (eg against PO closures or privatisation).
The remainder is used by the CWU nationally for political donations and political campaigning.
I think you should be allowed to opt out of paying the 2p that goes to the Labour Party, I believe that some other unions allow you to do that.
After the dust has settled on our forthcoming dispute, we need to think about resolutions to Branch AGMs for next year's CWU conference. I don't know how it works. Would probably need a Rule Change.
