We used to have two people who would not join the union on religious grounds (I don't know why. My dad was a lay preacher and a hard line union man, but there you go). These two would always support any strike, so we decided we would support them if any manager gave them a hard time, which they never did.iow1 wrote:ok so i have an even stranger question. union rep is away althogh will be back in time for the picket line but can non union members strike? i thought we could advise them not to cross the line but what re pecussions do the screws use on these co workers who will support us and stay away?
The Industrial Workers of the World. The union whose members never scab!

Can the union refuse to attend a conduct code/disciplinary meeting if a non-member, who crossed the picket, asks them to represent them.
I hope not as if they don't back us up now why should they expect a union who they don't belong to come running to their aid.

i got the same issue at my office spoke to my branch sec who advised me that non-union members can refuse to cross a picket line as a matter of consicience
but have signed up 2 non-members today who will be standing on the line
its sad that a couple of non-members are comitted to the cause when there are members who took part in the ballot and still want to cross the line and reap (hopefully) all the benefits we are fighting for

to keep as many people out as possible i advise the non-members they dont need to cross the line then if they get into trouble at a later date just tell them to sign up (even on a temp basis) to the unionnelson wrote:At their own risk. That is unless RM just want a strike and is not interested in anything else this time.!!We were told today that non-members can strike if they so wish
that way we keep the numbers down which im sure RM will use for the next strike date
better to have the guys on our side of the line than RM side

I am beginning to get fed up trying to convince people to join the union now, and support the action. They know the score and what RM are trying to do and they do not care. So bollocks let them stay out and get done. I am pissed off listening to half baked excuses why they wont come out on strike. These people are selfish, and do not care for anybody except themselves. The vote was a democratic one and the no votes lost, so they should now support the majority. That is democracy is it not?

oops is our rep the first in the country to be interviewed for alleged harrassment. She's only been in the office 2 days and was told she had intimadated a union member!!!!! Now she can be scarey but not once has she hassled any one. the screws are obviously a bit pissed at her.
they are trying to scare her. although i know she will not back down. the iow has suddenly got real exciting for once
