Democracy is overrated when it is devalued by lies and falsehoods as Boris and co said at the time before the vote be very interesting how he now bats a way all the footage of his BREXIT campaign lies so he can bring together the broken egg shell of a conservative party!Tman wrote:The rather obvious difference being that "we" can elect (or not) MP's like Fox and Williamson, unlike the Sir Humphries of the world. We have enough of our own without another few layers of them in Brussels.
If the "unelected bureaucrats" (of the last few posts) are so good and MPs so ignorant, why do we bother with the costly upheaval of a GE every few years?

Brexit has divided no other group than the conservative party more than any other party in our nation so what we have now is MP's scrambling for a job the that took one hard nosed bitch down believing they could do a better job than her not that I like her she did hold her party more than some of these new and old faces will do. But time will tell but the numbers have not changed people even conservatives don't change their views over night unless they will say anything for power!

I wouldn't mind if Corbyn had a pro-Brexit stance, at least it would be a stance.RTP wrote:Find out soon enough just what damage has been done to the labour party by it's leaders pro brexit stance.
At the moment he's trying to ride two ponies at once and he's just coming across as a coward.

That's a bit strong more like he is waiting for the white flag to be raised at 10 downing street even after the new leader is elected trying to box 308 MP's in the same box will fail and general election will follow!Woody Guthrie wrote:I wouldn't mind if Corbyn had a pro-Brexit stance, at least it would be a stance.RTP wrote:Find out soon enough just what damage has been done to the labour party by it's leaders pro brexit stance.

Corbyn has a problem.
He personally dislikes the EU
The Party he leads tends towards remaining in the EU.
The voter base for the Labour party is pro-Brexit.
Its a circle he can't square.
Which is more remarkable given that its the Conservatives who are imploding with A PM who promised Brexit,
a Party that is overwhelming pro-Brexit,
and a base that is also overwhelming pro-Brexit.
Yet though both parties did poorly in the EU election, the conservatives faired the worst.

On a mathematically seats-lost basis that's true, but given the abysmal performance of the useless Tories over the last few years, and the sharp rise in support for the party led by Uncle Jeremy over recent years, Corbyn's party did far worse than they should have done.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:

The Conservatives were always going to get a deserved drubbing for their recent performances, so what spin is Corbyn and co going to put on these sets of results?
Maybe the good old standby of "we didn't get our message across".

I don't think so. Judging from recent polls the Brexit party was the clear winner. People are fed up with excuses and what if's....that attitude just gets you absolutely nowhere, just like the last 3 years. It's time we were bold, and if we leave under WTO rules, then it's under WTO rules!! Leaving the EU is never going to be easy,it's going to take time to undo all that work that previous politicians blindly signed us up to.mickeymacca wrote:And furthermore in the absence of any trade deals, and operating on purely WTO rules we will be under the behest of the 'most favoured nation' rules regarding the setting of tariffs, although we can always have a referendum to leave the WTO I suppose............
Also how will we control the Northern Ireland border, put up a physical border and renege on a peace treaty, or leave it as it is (which will be against WTO rules) and have a border anyone from the EU can just stroll over, unchecked.
There is a reason no other countries in the world operate on solely WTO rules and that is because it is not in any countries economic interest to do so.
And just leaving without keeping to the T and C's of our membership (paying our dues) of the EU is hardly a good position to be winning the trust of other countries we wish to be striking deals with.
I think you are on the turn Postslip

I recall disagreeing with you on Corbyn at the last GE, I've completley changed my mind on him and wish he would step aside, I don't think he is overly bright. There is a drip/drip of leading Lab MPs calling for a clear position on a second referendum which looks like the route they may well take, interesting times.....Tman wrote:On a mathematically seats-lost basis that's true, but given the abysmal performance of the useless Tories over the last few years, and the sharp rise in support for the party led by Uncle Jeremy over recent years, Corbyn's party did far worse than they should have done.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:

As a party it wasJudging from recent polls the Brexit party was the clear winner.
However, even Sky News is now saying that the 2 parties that had no clear position over Brexit (Conservatives and Labour) lost vote share, but the parties that did have clear positions both remain and leave, gained vote share.
In fact, ignoring the votes for Labour and Conservative, Pro remain parties had a greater share of the votes. (at the moment) https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-48418834" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We live in Interesting times.Although the Brexit Party emerged victorious, the results suggest the country is split on Brexit.
If you were to add up the votes of all of the parties that firmly back Remain (the Liberal Democrats, Change UK, the Greens and Plaid Cymru) you would get 38%.
The total of the no-deal supporting parties (Brexit Party and UKIP) is 37%.
Intriguingly, if you were to put Labour in the Remain column, this would put it on 53%, compared to 46% on the Leave side if you included the Tory vote share.

I think the only thing that is clear is that the European elections have told us nothing we don't already know.
