Perhaps the best thing for most of us would be if RM was no longer legally obliged to deliver to every address, that way RM could focus all on delivering only parcels.
I for one would not mind driving in van and delivering rather than walking all day.
I think eventually the time will come when this will be a reality, perhaps not in our lifetimes but it will happen.
Just as all paper currency will and in some countries already has been phased out, so too will letters as all mail will be electronic.
Our jobs as we know them are being held there by our union making sure that the government ensures that RM continue with the USO.
Letters are a dying market and RM or any other company would be foolish to continue in the future to fulfill that obligation, just look at what happened to whistl.
RM is no longer state owned so it is only fulfilling that obligation for good public relations, but slowly it will remove itself from it.

What we must ensure is that ALL delivery staff whether they be with RM, Amazon etc are ALL on equal levels of pay and conditions, we must unite other delivery staff from these other companies to join our union or a new united union otherwise we may one day be degraded to their level.
I think this is an important point, yes we are competing companies but we are also in the same sector of employment, we may be better paid then them but this could so easily change, and the powers that be could use them as an example of how the job can be done for less pay.
This could happen if we no longer deliver letters.

Yep, and the best of luck with both those particular wishes...

With all the mail being sequenced we could still extend the walks and the excess staff doing the next day parcels and packets round. just an idea that maybe could be developed by more experienced posties but we need to think of alternatives or what RM are proposing will be in before we know it.
So increasing the walks will increase wear & tear and injuries and your solution is introducing a system to allow for the increasing of walks?

Yes it will but not as much as RM want and by going out the same time as now we won't be out so late, I know it's not perfect but maybe the idea could be developed to suit us and present it as a compromise otherwise I just know they will try and force it on us and some of the people in my area are just not up for a fight.

If a longer delivery is ever agreed by the union then this "one :wave" will be to say bye bye to the union I would imagine.

The union can't agree to any changes without a ballot of the membership first so we have got to get it out of our minds that the union are to blame for these proposals. There will be without doubt lengthy negotiations where our negotiators will be putting our arguments forward forcefully and at the end of it they will make a reccomendation then it's up to us the members to decide. If we all take the view to leave the union then you can kiss goodbye to our terms and conditions that we have now.

I agree with paul0203 that we should start looking at alternative proposals where we can achieve a win win situation rather than just say no we are not having it because I cannot see RM backing off if they have made such a vast investment.

No not really the new iLSMs which are beening put into Mail Centres have a CSS capability. They sequence at a much much faster rate too.

Well, our rep broke this news to us this morning as though the exact plans for our office have already been decided. And what a fantastic job he did...NOT.
All our mail WILL arrive on a 17.5 tonner, our working hrs WILL be 1000 - 1800 or later, and half of us will lose our jobs sooner rather than later.

Cue people beginning to stress and worry.

Right now, in our office we have nothing to worry about for quite a while.

1, Even now when it's pretty damn quiet we're still getting random yorks of parcels (mostly tracked technically due for delivery that day!) arriving at lunchtime. Mail centre needs serious sorting out first.

2, Excluding that anomaly, our mail still has to arrive in 3 hits in the morning because our yard (and the streets leading up to the office) can barely squeeze in a 7.5 never mind anything bigger.

3, When it all comes a little too close together we have to have leave it stacked up outside because we do not have the space inside to hold any more than the 15 Yorks a 7.5 brings.

4, Hundreds of new homes in the planning stage and if they get the go ahead we're screwed because we don't have the physical space to have new/ bigger frames. or the extra 2/3 vans that would be required.

So before any of this 1 wave crap hits us we're going to need a nice shiny new office.
Our nearest neighbouring office about 10 miles away will be in the same boat, so presumably the logical solution will be for us to be amalgamated at a location mid way between the two.

That would mean more travel out and back from the first and last delivery points which equals less delivery time.

I would assume there are a good number of offices in a similar situation, which will put the brakes on this for a while, for some of us at least.

We had a meeting today with our DOM and union rep. Both said it's a rumour regarding start times. They said it's just one option the company is looking at and that it is some way off. So don't get too worried about what is going on regarding rumours. We've all heard rumours before and things haven't materialised so it's best to not get too worked up about it.

Our rep is not in the pocket of our DOM and our DOM has been straight with us over the years so I've no reason to not believe anything they said.

All due respect to your DOM and indeed your local rep the future strategy has not been discussed with these in any detail as yet. It has been discussed at National Level and at Divisional Level.

Last week all National Directors and DSMs were called to a meeting at the Connauight rooms in London on what is known at One Plan.

Let's look at some of the facts

Royal Mail can only compete with other companies when it delivers parcels and letters together. If it delivers parcels seperatly then our terms and conditions are too high compared to Amazon , Yodel , TNT or most other carriers.

Most business want a later acceptance time. The biggest use of the Internet is between 19:00 hours and Midnight , Royal Mail currently cannot provide a delivery until day b when most other companies provide the next day.
This is meaning Royal Mail cannot compete in the biggest growing market.

The CWU and Royal Mail have modelled two scenarios one is can we move to one wave and keep everyone's start times and 2 what happens if you move to one wave and what is the time that gets to delivery offices.

The first modelling reduces the amount which can be sequenced and for example Burslem currently sequencing 84% and would only be able to do 71% or Kingston upon Thames currently does 82% but would only be able to do 74% if start times remained the same.

The same for Campbeltown , Clydebank and many others . You can simply not sequence the same amount as now if you go to one wave and attempt to keep start times the same !

The second modelling demonstrates you can do one wave in some offices and move start times but you cannot do it in all offices hence the 65%. For example one wave would get into the following offices at Airdrie 9:05 , Clydebank 9:15 , G1&4 06:55 , G11&12 08:45 , Dudley 0700 , Newcastle under Lyme 08:25 , Kidderminster 08:10 ,Bedford 06:50 , Covertry South 07:50 , Lecister west 09:10 , Hull City 09:10 , Lincoln 08:50 Sheffield North DO , 09:30 , Islington 07:50 Streatham 09:05 , St. Albans 07:50

These are just a few plenty more and some which can't get into the office on time for one wave because every office takes longer on the machine. But no one should be under any illusions where The direction Royal Mail is going !

Your local MC has probably run out of time and has had to clear the space they use for Inward Tracked as the space is probably needed for something else from 06:00

If anything it'll probably end up with DO mergers into new buildings sooner rather then later. On Google Earth, look for an industrial estate half way between your office and the other one and that'll probably be were your new office will be located

If one wave does get brought in you WILL have much later start times as there won't be any work for you to do apart from preping all your d2ds on a Monday

None of us are under any illusions where The direction Royal Mail is going but we are in which way the cwu is heading! How can you deliver mail on foot safely at 5:30pm in the dark? black ice/hazards you cannot see you would trip over/ security in high crime areas? What are the cwu saying to the business about this? Thats what the members are saying!

Without them going into that detail they did pretty much say what you have said. So it has got down to their level.

What they did say was that it is an option that is being looked at. As I have already said we have seen royal mail come up with ideas before, everyone panics and then it doesn't happen. Remember when we were all supposed to be piling into a minibus and jumping out like the a team to do little loops then meet up at the bus and off we go to the next walk? That was trialed in some places but never materialised. Yes they are currently looking at ways to go to one wave and at the minute it may result in much later start/finish times. But nothing is confirmed or set in stone and another operation may come in to change it.

The current model they are looking at is used somewhere in Europe. But that doesn't mean it's going to work here, hence the trial.
