Why did you bother?
It's not as if you were going to add anything to it.

because without reading it i couldn't know if i could add anything to it.
unlike you who are obviously a smart-arse and knows everything
Much rather have a smart arse who is willing to help others, than someone who resorts to name calling or belittles others efforts. :no no

Just to add I don't think Fishtank is a Smart Arse :nervous :nervous :nervous

That's what we do in our office. This coming round of holidays it's Seniority first...and I'm 4th bottom, but I've always had the holiday weeks I've wanted in the past and one day I'll be the senior guy in the office. We're all happy with the system tbh.

Have you put in a grievance, there is not much the Union can do without you taking that first step.

A lot of members don't know why the Union tolerates seniority in some units.

All unions support objective criteria because it means that management can't fix the outcome to benefit favourites. Favouritism is used to break union solidarity, it's classic divide and rule.

Sometimes, an objective criterion such as seniority can indirectly discriminate against groups of workers who share a protected characteristic like age. Sometimes a criterion may be objective but is also blatantly unfair. The Union should always choose the fairest objective criterion otherwise we just hand a ready made group of favourites to management on a plate.

Seniority is tolerated because it is seen as less worse than the alternative which is letting management choose. However, seniority is not the only objective way to select.

Using a random order initially then rotating it seems fairer than seniority provided everyone gets an opportunity to have their fair share of prime weeks.

I care dingo because if we don't apply agreements properly we can hardly bitch about it when Royal Mail don't.

I totally agree with you, fish tank. I've been a union member for years ( NUM to be precise) and no matter how long you had been down the pits you were all treated the same. I can't believe some of the rubbish I've read on here from so called union men! I've been in the cwu at Parcelforce about six years and can assure you there is no one except management senior to me. We've got this ' seniority' twaddle going on at the moment, most of the lads don't agree with it only the more senile ones. Sorry meant to say ' senior ones'! We had a union meeting a few weeks ago where we all voted and it was decided holidays would be chosen on rolling seniority so over a few years everyone gets a fair go. The union rep said he would put it to the manager for us. Guess what? I just found out He never went! Guess what else? He is the longest server in the depot! Guess what else? He wont knows hit him when i confront with this next week! It's one thing getting screwed over by a boss but another thing to get screwed over by your union rep. And for someone to say everyone gets their holiday choice with seniority, how can they? Kids August holidays last 6 weeks, the 3 lots of 2 weeks. How can, say, the 5th in a group of 9 have a summer holiday with his kids when the first 3 in the group get them every year?

We have about 160 staff, give or take, the list is organised on a seniority basis from most senior to most junior - the list is then divided into 4, so there is roughly 40 people in each group. Year 1 the first 40, ie the most senior get first pick, year 2 the second group, ie the second most senior get first pick and the most senior go to last pick soooooooo it goes 1,4,3,2,1 - that way everyone gets the first pick in rotation. However there is a slight niggle insofaras it has been known for a new starter to occupy a vacant spot in a group to which as far as seniority is concerned he shouldn't have but of course as time has gone on nobody really cares because you are going to get your pick in turn and the system has been in operation so long seniority has become unimportant.

Found it on page 1
MinisterofCucumber wrote:Your problem is that you probably have members that believe they are more important than other humans they work with and they will put pressure on you to keep their perks. Get your Area Rep to tell them that the Union can't support seniority because if we supported seniority, we would be supporting the policies of parties like the BNP and this is against Union rules and a rep could face disciplinary action by the Union for supporting the aims and objectives of racist organisations.
Bodger if you cold use the quote feature when referring to a post it makes comprehension of your point easier.

Now to find out if MoC explained his point.
