How long does it take to find out if you have been granted family friendly hours? My office goes live next week with finishing times changing to after 4pm, I put in my request as soon as I found out and am still waiting for any info to if it's been granted or not, I need to be able to pick my daughter up from school, unfortunately our union rep is like a ghost haven't seen any sign of her since she got the job!

Did you apply formally in writing? Have you had a look at the policy?

Yes all in writing according to policy, I don't think anyone has heard back yet

Just out of interest how have they accommodated you finishing earlier than standard finish time ?

Yes I finish earlier and start earlier, plus I keep my currant shift pattern

Amazing to think at one point recruitment was largely focused on the convenience of working between 9AM and 3PM for those, particularly young mothers, who were looking for a part time job that would allow them to drop off and pick up the kids from school.

If you get an exemption it'll last about six months. The intention is not to permit you an eternal convenience but to give you six months to either make arrangements to fit your life around the job or find another job with suitable hours.

When you remind anyone about this in discussion they are agog. The creation of 'AG's was exactly that, pitched primarily at working parents. Despised by the CWU to the point where the union refused to allow these workers to be called the same as full time workers. The mob in London kicked off because they were able to pick up anyway and didn't want their overtime taken off them. A sordid part of the rancid history of the CWU.

That was ages ago, most of the have either forgotten or are in their own little world, for me I was off while all the info was given out. When we last changed duty times there were reminders of shift times on notice boards, this time nothing.

Also my family friendly is reviewed every year, apparently to stop people with older kids (16+) that abuse the system.
