Victim of stray/unaccompanied dog attack

Post by sardonicus »

Whilst on duty on Monday 20th July, I was attacked and bitten by a stray/unaccompanied dog.

I recieved hospital treatment and the attack has been logged/documented by my section manager.

I made it into work the next day, however, due to the pain from the wounds I couldn't properly carry out my work and now realise the extent of my wounds and pain and need to rest and let the wounds heal somewhat..

I am a 23.5hr float, 11 years service, work o/t most non duty days..

I just wondered if anyone could advise me if there is a procedure I should follow that would allow me to take some time off without it being classed as as sickness, but would still cover my wages, and if so would it cover my average wage rather than contractual wage ( I work many hours over my contractual hours on a regular basis).

I would also ask if anyone could advise if there is still a compensation scheme for dog attack victims whilst being attacked on duty?

I am aware that in recent years opg's within my office have been awarded compensation for dog attacks whilst on duty..but they have since left so I can't discuss their 'journey' with them..

I have spoken to my rep who told me they cannot do anything until they receive a copy of the form my manager filled out today, the day after the attack - the form consisted of minimal information gathering of the event by the manager rather than an a full on explanation and I wasn't given an opportunity to make a statement..

Just to confirm, the dog was in a public place, no owner, and attacked me..
The manager was informed once I was safe and my duty partner drove me to hospital..
I returned to work the next day bandaged and medicated but was in too much pain to carry put my duties..
I have told the manager that having tried to cope with work and my injuries, I'm in too much pain and need time off work to recover..

He did mention something about absence due to a dog attack would not be counted as a sickness event, but didn't say if I would be paid, if the pay is an average of my pay including regular overtime, or any mention of any compensation schemes

Any advice would be appreciated
