NON - DRIVER ( ARE OUR DAYS NUMBERED )

Post by monkeybuisness »

Currently I’m on a HCT duty and I have nearly 30 years on the job, reading into the current ODM method RM want to bring in it looks very bleak for us non-drivers. I’ve asked about HCT duties available in the incoming ODM revision ( which will happen ) to the COM he told me they will be HCT duties available then changed his tune a few days later when asked again, the local union rep said straight away no HCT duties will be available. I totally understand that the job is a driving job now but I do hope when the time comes RM will recognise the service some have put in instead of trying to fob us off to another office and say we offered him a alternative. Give me a half decent “ see you “ package because all voluntary redundancy is £14k that works out £500 for every year worked.I hope they do the right thing but sadly current events I cannot see this.

If you're on 37hrs per week then I think VR would be a years pay if they did pay you off

How is the geography of your office ? How many HCT duties have you currently got ? Would it be practical to get rid of all of them and buy a load more vans, or have you just got a couple maybe that could be converted to van share which along with all the other van pairings will require someone sat in the passenger seat 5 days per week mon-friday.

How can your union rep be 100% sure there'll be no hct's unless all the new scenarios have already been planned out in which case you should have been told what's going on rather than it being a secret, or is he just making it up.

Apart from the obvious fly in the ointment of what to do on Saturdays then there's plenty of work for non drivers in delivery offices under the new system it seems to me that it appears they're becoming to be seen as an inconvenience.

Just my thoughts/opinions there happy to be corrected if I'm mistaken, what does anyone else think?

There's absolutely no reason why HCT duties cannot remain or that workers not contracted to drive will have no role. The CWU should be trying harder.

That's what I thought (on all three points)

And you're spot on. The method change is inclusive and transparent.

We are a pilot office. There are non drivers on hcts in our office. On Saturdays they are supposed to stay in and prep d2ds but they usually get sent out doing first class mail and packets in a hct. We did the heavy and light model at Christmas but after Christmas was told it didn't make enough savings.

At my office of about 50 people,we actually have no non drivers.
We have only one walking duty, largely covering the town centre because parking regulations are a nightmare.
The duty holder is a 30 year man, so took the job when it was not a requirement.
However he has a license, drives privately and did actually drive for RM for years, though not in say the last 15 years.
Given these facts would he be in his rights to insist on remaining a none driver?
He tells me, he would prefer this.
I do not believe he ever stated that he no longer wished to drive, he just chose the duty in a repick and has held it since.

My office has 4 HCT duties, it appears they will remain that way with ODM.

Although there was a nasty (probably true) rumour that non-drivers will be forced onto HCT duties regardless if they want too or not.

COME ON RM!! Just give us VR or send us to the mail centre.

He's unfortunately not being offered "the money" he was asking the question is he likely to be offered VR?
