Said the same thing the other day.

What gets me, in a WTL session the other day the line manager said something like:

"Mail is down 2%, this cost RM £x million a year, downstream access is costing £x million a year. Packet deliveries are up 40% so we need to cut costs".

I asked him how much a 40% extra rise in packets was making . He didn t know. This 40% rise in packets has been a steady increase for the last 3 years.

So we have a 120% rise in packets thanks to eBay, amazon and play.com to name a few, heaps more mailsort, double the mech. trays and we are told that the RM is suffering. Bollocks my friend, this is creative accounting. Mark my words once the post office closures, sackings (not redundancies, they cost too much), price hikes of 1st and 2nd class letters and the overtime has gone (that good old YES vote comes back to haunt), in a years time we will announce massive profits and :lfo and :cfo will sit on their mercenary fat arses and pick up a cool few millions pounds worth of bonunes.

Oh yes and the pension.................................. This is spot on: http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/forum/vi ... 796#104796 Stand up and be counted for f***s sake!!!!

I don´t see how Royal Mail can count every letter or packets or flat to see what the workload we have to deal with. I believe Cheaper Junk Mail mean more Junk Mail produced. Just make it more expensive.

They don't count it they weigh it. IIRC last year we got a lot of junk mail (customers words) in envelopes or quiet bulky ones. However, this year, and it might be my ailing alcohol ridden mind, they seems to be way more single piece slim card type mail coming through. Call me cynical but surely an envelope with a piece of paper weights a few grammes more than 1 piece of card. 1 gramme makes no difference to us but when weighed by the millions it must make a huge difference.

.....on the other hand some of the mailsort trash weighs a lot more per item (screwfix cats etc (some might argue they are packets)). Still a bit green, just turn up and do my sorting and delivery so don't know too much about the weighing etc, so.........

1. Does every york that leaves the mail centre regardless of whether it is first, second, mailsort of downstream access stuff get weighed?
2. Does every york that arrives at a DO get weighed regardless?
3. Do all the door to doors get weighed? if not (I am guessing they don't) why not.
4. Shouldn't we ALL weigh our bags every day to illustrate how much we are carrying?
5. Should we keep note of how many packets we are delivering every day and also note the number we are bloody bringing back after 739ing them? Damn free light bulbs! :d'oh!

I don't know the answers to the first 3 points, but number 4. YES, we should weigh our bags every day and ensure they are not overweight. There should be a matrix describing the weight allowed next to the scales and the weights should be recorded. Point 5. well the drivers in our office do that, they count the number of pouches, drop bags and packets they take out, they also record the number of packets brought back, but not the number of P739. I think it is a good idea if you take a note of how many packets, recorded deliveries and special deliveries you have each day and how many you have to P739. If nothing else at least you'll be able to show (not prove) the increase in the number of these items and the implied increase in the timescale involved in handling them. It may only take a few minutes per item, but the time adds up, sometimes as much as 20 minutes a day can be lost waiting for a signature or P739ing an item. I wish I'd thought of noting how many I had just for my own sake.
I use a trolley and after completing I usually have 1 full pouch of P739 items. Have you ever tried to flag down a RM driver they never seem to see me. Must be the 2 big red bags on my trolley and the hi-vis vest, I just blend right into the background. :nana

It's the well known physical inconstant, the more volumes decline the more s**t you deliver.Given the fact that RM were officially allowed to produce two completely different sets of accounts for last year, this obvious distortion should be fooling no one
