Hi all, find below the Mount Pleasant bulletin of the 25th of March.

Comments welcome as usual!
DOING THE RIGHT THING!
Workers from Paisley DO walked out Tuesday. And this is
only one office which we've heard about. RM hadn't
provided them with hand sanitisers, proper van disinfection
etc., and no protective gear nor measures to deliver
essential mail ONLY! Not to mention the virtual
impossibility of working 2 metres apart while indoors!
They're right - but things are very bad everywhere! For our
own sakes and the sake of everyone else, how can we
tolerate this situation?
ABSURD RESPONSE FROM RM
Yes - that update on Tuesday from RM bosses (after CWU
intervention), just shows how they're on another planet -
probably called "Profit-Before-Life"! So we're supposed to
work 2 metres apart? How? Frames are squashed
together and so are we and last week we were crammed in
here! Although there are fewer of us in this week, casuals
are still covering those already sick at home/in quarantine!
H&S advice is stop work if we're unsafe, so we'll have to
WHERE IS THE GEAR?
Why did it take till the end of last week before some basic
protective measures came in on the shop-floor? We
should've had them weeks earlier! Still no gloves! Still not
enough hand sanitiser including at the entrance, and
managers continue to tell us to use soap and hot water,
when most work areas have no sink! And how many doors
do we go thru to get to the toilets? As for the wipes, how
useful are they?
Same here with us cleaners, we're asked to wipe door
handles and work surfaces... But not only can we NOT
keep up with disinfection, as it would take many more
hands, but the Elephant hasn't even ensured that we have
enough correct equipment (the masks/gloves we have are
sub-standard) to keep us (and everyone else) safe!
IT'S HERE AT MP
We've heard that a deliveries workmate tested positive for
Covid-19 - and surely there are many more at home who
haven't even had a test. Which just underlines the risk we
take on deliveries and distribution, let alone inside MP.
The Tuesday statement - stopping shared vans, 2-metre
rule, hand hygiene, etc., is all very well, but a lot of this isn't
even possible, because resources are absent - let alone
management plans... As someone said, “unfortunately,
this disease doesn't wait for tomorrow”. Yes, it's with us
now. Like Paisley DO, we must act.
So we're the "5th Emergency Service"? In that case,
shouldn't we stop all non-essential work? The youngest
and healthier among us could sort/deliver ONLY
urgent/necessary mail - like for the NHS, benefits, food
banks, personal letters and comms to key workers, etc.
But keeping all of us dealing with a growing number of
non-essential packets? This is just bloody mindedness.
As for delivering D2D... it must be junked NOW!
TOILET PAPER DELIVERY
Yes, talking about Door-to-Dusbin, it must stop! Why
should any of us spend time prepping this c**p or
delivering it? PostmanBitesDog (?) on "royalmailchat"
wrote that in the USA, the sewers were becoming blocked
because people were using papers, magazines etc., as
toilet roll sold out - the best use for D2Ds! Others said that
this last week the junk-mail delivery actually included
several new drops for "discount funerals"... You couldn't
make it up.
STAY AT HOME!
We hear there’s a manager dedicated to calling everyone
who’s absent due to the Covid-19? He is telling us to call
111 or see a GP, when official guidance is to do neither of
these things (111 is asking us to go online)! Yup, even in
the middle of this crisis, management is still chasing us at
home - and what's more, giving us misleading information!
So the union leaders put aside the strike (despite the
94.5% yes vote; 63.4% turnout) - this time in the "national
interest"... Yet RM continues to behave carelessly towards
us and the general public. Italian workers had to go on
general strike (as recently as 2 weeks ago, well into the
worst part of their epidemic) to force companies (like Fiat-
Milan!) to be responsible and/or shut down. Striking now
against RM would be the only effective way to shock it and
the government into respecting our/the public's interests!
THE FIGHT GOES ON!
BTW on top of it all bosses have been using the situation
to introduce their cuts! Yes, the boss here wants to go
ahead with his planned VRs! At a time when casuals are
brought in to cover for the lack of hands, he had the cheek
to tell union reps that 35 VRs are needed. Of course some
of us need to leave this mad house, but new recruits and
part-time-made-full-time must replace them!
As we said, now that more people are working from home,
they send/order more, bigger, packages. Is this why the
government designated us “key workers” - to keep the
economy running from people’s homes? Or is it because
we're “key” for RM's profits? Either way, RM bosses
clearly intend to try to make extra gains out of this crisis.
Another reason to implement our own rules here... if we
decide to remain on the job!
