USO

19 Mar 2020, 21:24

When are Royal Mail going to ask for the USO to be suspended? One of the reasons schools were shut was because of a lack of staff, when will RM think of their staff? As usual we have to lapse all of the duties that have someone off. Getting thoroughly sick of the way we are being treated, we are losing someone from our office because a bigger office has staffing issues!

USO

19 Mar 2020, 21:26

If you haven't got time to 'lapse' then don't do it,you have a start time and a finishing time! There were 3 or 4 deliveries not done in my office today due to high level of absence.

RM will probably lose a few staff next week when they have to look after their kids

USO

19 Mar 2020, 22:47

Careful what You wish for suspension of the USO will be just what Rico wants. It will then be tweaked how He would like it. As said above start time and finish time with breaks in between.Problem solved.

If we are key workers then our kids can go to school

USO

Temporary measures will have to be introduced with the amount of sick rising, maybe a 4 or 5 day working week.

We've already lost a few where they're in one of the at risk groups so are staying off work

Bloody Right Scooby .... We have to be very careful about messing about with the USO. Once RM manage to get it suspended we'll have a fight on our hands to get it back. And that's going to cost a lot of jobs.

As you say just work properly, Posties are still they're own worst enemy. When are they going to learn? STOP WORKING FOR FREE, and use the Over Running Procedure to finish at your proper time, if you want to. :cuppa

From a recent article;
Royal Mail workers have offered to set aside their differences with bosses to become the “fourth emergency service”
In a statement, it said: “In recognition of the fact that Royal Mail Group is the only service that connects every address in this country via its universal service — something our dispute is seeking to protect — we have made a proposal to the company based on putting the interests of the nation first.

I believe any alteration to the USO would be counter to the requirement of an "emergency service"

The USO is already failing. Over 10% of the walks in our office didn't go out today, and some of them have mail and packets left from Saturday. This situation isn't going to improve and going to a 4 or 5 day week will not help, going to a 7 day week might, if you could staff it. Oh, wait . . . unlike every other 'key' service, RM have suspended recruitment.

I fully support the notion of delivering to every house 6 days a week if required. However I cannot reconcile that with delivering leaflets for closed takeaways and postcards advertising furniture sales for outlets that have also closed when far more useful mail is left in fittings.

RM need to prioritise. And they need to start with the 1.5 million NHS letters coming tomorrow.

I think the use of RM employees as an emergency service would render the USO totally impractical.
If we have to check on the elderly and vulnerable, deliver their medicines and food parcels with a significantly reduced workforce, it would make delivering to every address an impossibility.
There may not be the time to prep all the duties and there won't be the staff available to deliver them all.

RM management are an utter joke, our line manager as already started trying to bully people into taking lapsing even though a few walks are failing
it's not rocket science to ensure any failed duties are given priority to be cleared the next day, nobody can be expecting absolutely everything going out same day with what's going off

1,500,000 letters divided by 58,000 walks is approx 25 each. Hardly armageddon on delivery.

I'm not suggesting it is. The point you seem to be missing is that a fair number of those letters will be delayed while far less important mail is being delivered. That's hardly RM acting responsibly.

Royal mail is the only company to be delivering (potentially) coronavirus on every letter to every address in the uk six days a week. How silly does that sound? With the virus staying on paper for a day, it's the truth.
They say on average one person infects 2.4 people. An average postie with coronavirus ( and you don't have to display symptoms) can pass it on to 400, 500, 600 ? WHY OH WHY ARE WE STILL AT WORK!

USO

We shouldn't be at work, it's as simple as that.
