HELP NEEDED! to put one in the eye of RM
HELP, I need to find post people who have sufferd from 'Plantar Fasciitis' also known as policemans foot. As I am putting in a personal injury claim againsed RM but need to find more people in the job whos got it. It starts slowly with pain on the front/bottom of the heal (like haveing a pebble in your boot) but can leave you with sevear pain or even disabled. Its caused by too much walking, poor shoes, walking abnormally (leaning due to a mail bag) My consultant said it was caused by my job my soliciter said i need to find more people with it. Ive been a postie for 20yrs and I am now lame in my left foot. Along with two opperations (one an emergancy) this as cost me my job. with union help I have applied for a IT and a personal injury.

Good luck mate. I've been doing this job for 7 years and about the only part of me that's still ok is my feet. I'm sure that there must be loads of guys on here with lame feet that don't know what it's called. I'll check with the guys in my office and let you know. I'm sure that RM are aware of the problem, that's why they allow some people to wear their own shoes.

I had exactly the same symptoms as you described and went to my GP as soon as I started to struggle on the walk. He arranged a cortisone injection into the plantar sheath under my foot which needed a couple of days recovery time but stopped the problem for about 6 months after which it returned. A second injection was arranged but I was warned that it would be the last one as repetitive steroid injections are a no no. He advised me to enquire about fitted platforms to support my foot so I went to the Scholls outfitters locally and got fitted with a solid plate which is very slim and can be moved from one pair of shoes to another. I can't see them on the website, so maybe because they have to be fitted they are only available at the scholl retail outlets but here is a link that may helpleiwolf wrote:I got it, seeing the podiarty (can't spell that word) and seeing what they are doing about it. I have been having pains in the ball of my foot, unable to stand when i get out of bed and my leg and back is seizing up. so good luck mate

I have had them for over two years now and they cost about £75 but are the best investment I ever made - no problems since although the first week as your foot adjusts to then can be a bit uncomfortable.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile

Thanks brothermagrew for that link - I have just got in contact with the CWU and their solicitors Simpson and Millar to ask them questions. Will be interesting to hear their excuses.
I will be sending a private message to Lame duck as you may be able to use all the info that simpson and millar have.
I'm a postie of 28+ years who was told that this sort of thing doesn't happen to those of us who have been on the job this long - it's usually new entrants.
As for the injections - I've been concerned for some time that I was actually given 5. I didn't have the op though as I tried everything to avoid it especially as I was told that it wasn't always a success - you have my sympathy.
There are exercises which can be done to help build the strength back up for the muscles around the plantar and also to stretch the hamstrings which if are tight don't help the condition and put extra strain on the plantar.
I will go and find the links and come back in another reply tomorrow hopefully.
I still get aches everyday so have to monitor everything I do but with some care and the right exercises one does get back to some normality - athletes recover from this so so can we - but if RM can get screwed for what they've done to us I'll gladly help in anyway.
Take care

Many many thanks to you all for your support, the links are very very usefull.
Any one who has it or thinks their comeing down with it streching helps but more walking undoes this, the orthotric (custom made foam insoles) are the best non surgical treatment you must get them as soon as you can. Please put the word about I want to hear from as many people as possible, maby a joint action.

Hi again,
OK here are some links with exercises and explain what it's all about.
Nobody's plantar fasciitis are the same - you have to find the exercise which is best for you. The thing that is probably most important is to understand what's happening - that every time you put your foot down you are stretching the plantar fascia like a rubber band. While sleeping this relaxes like a limp rubber band so when you first tread on you foot in the morning this rubber band is suddenly stretched and tears the plantar fascia - hence the morning pain.
To minimise this if you can buy some sort of night support it stops the rubber band from relaxing too much at night. BEFORE you put a foot to the floor in the morning gently flex the foot and bend the toes back + massage then do gentle toe grasping as per the first link below and gradually put weight on ( I bought one of the supports from a Lloyds Pharmasist - Boots didn't have any in my town - it's Thermoskin with Trioxon a theraphy + support for plantar fasciitis and cost £22.99)
Buy good quality shoes - Royal Mail shoes were/are rubbish - you need loads of cushioning to absorb as much of the impact as possible. You can claim £30 back from Royal Mail per pair as theirs are no good and you can't wear. Get a note from you doctor if needs be.
It is very important that if you have the beginnings of this - GO SICK. Continuing to walk on it to the extent we do will not make it go away - I know I've been there and learnt the hard way. I was lucky not to go for an op - it was extremely close.
Royal Mail have and are treating me like s**t over it and it's still going on.

I have Planter Fascitis in both feet. (my father also has the same problem). I've used orthotic insoles for the last 2 years and have few problems now. (I can't do deliveries any more (different medical reason), my father has had to transfer off deliveries as his GP has stated that any treatment will not be effective until he reduces the amount of walking that he does.)
For anyone who suffers from any foot problem try the insoles sold by this seller (on EBAY)
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Troo-Health-and-Well-Being
They may be the best available without going for the custom fitted option (which can be very expensive), and they don't break the bank.
