not allowed to cut off at xmas

had a work time boring today and was told that we are not allowed to cut off over xmas pressure as this is written in our contracts...now if this is true we are in deep deep sh1t....normally over xmas the mail sort tends to drop off so fewer flats and letters of this sort to accomodate the rise in stamped mail...now i cant see the likes of tnt etc reducing the mail they send through DSA so we are going to be absolutely slaughtered and is the dum going to allow us to book excess as there seems to be no agreement for extra hours anymore :cfo :lfo

Well just work to your hours and see what they do about it - as long as you fulfil your obligated hours then I am sure you have pressing reasons why you cannot work over.

When I was a delivery officer even with guaranteed hours I would work those days I wanted to and those I didn't I wouldn't.

We aren't servants at someones beck and call and certainly for the most part we have a life outside of RM.

royal mail cannot make you work over your contracted hours, why do posties think otherwise if managers are threatning them then report them to your union rep

Should be interesting deliveries this christmas, we start at 0630 now instead of 5 am, last year i was finishing between 3.30 and 4 with the early start, no way will i be out after 4 in the pitch black delivering mail

5. Local Negotiations
In order to secure sufficient and reliable staffing and so deliver quality services to our customers throughout the Christmas period, local negotiations will consider the following options:
- Local agreement for a level of employees to work their normal rest day in return for a day in lieu or Scheduled attendance.
- Pre-scheduling hours against forecast workload.
- Pressure overtime.
- Use of temporary / casual staff to supplement other resource.
Local negotiations will ensure that all employees are provided with a fair and manageable workload. Negotiations must be concluded by no later than 25 November and given the short timescales available by exception any disagreements should be forwarded by Area Representatives immediately to Divisional/AGM level.

I think it says somewhere in your contract that you have to do reasonable overtime, for me that would be if the duty will only take 10-15mins to finish then I'll do it otherwise it's cut off time

Our Acting DOM informed us at this mornings WTLL session that all duties during the Xmas fortnight will be commencing at 0515 hrs in our Delivery Office. This somehow seems to conflict with the later delivery start times that were introduced into our Delivery Office by Executive Action recently.

I'm not aware that anyone has to work overtime, that's surely the choice of that individual.
As for 'reasonable overtime', I've never heard of it.
I'll be working my contracted hours over Xmas and they can go feck themselves.

I think they are useing your contract it say's the same in mine from the late 80's but if you tell them before hand the ball is in their court!. Do it in front of all your work mate's though they can be sly bastard's these manager's these day's!

We moved away from negotiated hours because people like me wouldn't work any more than I wanted to - what we tend to do is negotiate how much additional time we have on IPS and because there are no holidays we have the extra staff and many people will work their day off for extra money at xmas - but god only knows what it will be like with later starts - we've gone from 0500 to 0615/0630 - funnily enough I expect them to say we should start earlier and if it is a YES vote I would imagine they are going to use the "flexibility" part of the agreement with "swings and roundabouts" being mooted only not so much of the roundabout.

The DUM gave every one a form today saying they had to sign it if they wanted to work over 48hrs over the xmas period something to do with EU law i just gave it back saying no thanks.
