School Visits. -Help. Thanks.
Hiya all.
I know that this post may seem alittle odd/strange to many of you, but please hear me out.I have been a postie for nearly 12 years, so got alittle bit of experience. What I do every school term is go into my daughters school, (and any other schools that need me)and they do a subject of "People in the community." What I do is go and talk to the kids, in complete uniform, cycle helmet, RM pouch, polished shoes, tie the works, and do a little presentation to the kids on life as a postman. They have other professions in, ie Fireman, Policeman, lollipop lady etc, people that the kids see out in the community.
What Im asking my fellow posties is - Is it possible to get my hands on any free bees eg. Pencils, rubbers for the kids????
What Im after is alittle bit of help, not abuse towards me or what I do, save that for other posts please, just alittle help for the kids, you never know, i may not get the opportunity to do it much longer....posties maybe a thing of the past by the time them kids get to my age.....
Im just after alittle help.... thank you.

You could try the BPMA. who are the British Postal Museum & Archive.
They have an outreach officer who might be able to advise or help you. They used to called Royal Mail Heritage and were part of Royal Mail until they were outsourced ( didn't make any money)
The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) - Freeling House Phoenix Place - LONDON WC1X 0DL - Tel 020 7239 2570 - The BPMA is the public identity of The Postal Heritage Trust - Charity No. 1102360 - Company No. 4896056
Otherwise the courier might be able to help.
Good luck

Thy used to do a video years ago called Lenny the Letter, which the kids loved, as well as badges, bookmarks and colouring sheets. Lenny the Letter might be available on DVD now. It's worth asking as when I used to go into schools, they got a copy given to them. Mind you, it's about four years since I last spoke to schools about Royal Mail, and there used to be a bit more of an idea of public service about back then.

Edited the title, not sure why you would think the members on here would give you abuse.
You're doing a grand thing and i'm sure the guys on here think that as well,we need more people like you that's for sure.
Hope someone can help you out with the bits you need.
Nice one,keep it up.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Thanks for all the replies so far...will look into them asap. At my daughters school, the reception class look at people that they see in the community, the fireman, lollipop woman, local poice etc..... the people that the kids see on a daily basis.I was approached by my daughters school 5 years ago, and its something that they do per term so I go every time. Regarding going into your local school....Its always good to have a way in..... a colleague may know a teacher at the school etc...Thats how I got into going to another school, went round to my colleagues home and spoke to his Mrs who's a teacher, we had a chat and it went from there.Don't think its a good idea just to go to local school and ask, not in this day anyway.....its good fun talking to the kids and the things that they come out with are very funny... you couldnt write a script for it.

PS, Its also a good idea to speak to your rep and DOM just to get some feedback from them. The school approach me 1st, then I speak to my line manager and DOM. I arrange a time and date, then ask the school to put it in writing to my DOM, who then lets me know that they have had the letter, then confirm the time/date. If it's in work time I cut off, go home and freshen up.Do my "talk" then carry on with delivery. Book the OT down as school visit.
PPS. Does anyone know where you can still get the old style flat top hats from? Think it will finnish my look off.

Thanks.Ive used vistaprint before also....but was after Pens/pencils etc that have Royal Mail on them...just asking incase someone knew of a old store cupboard that had Royal Mail stuff lieing around. About 5 years ago a old DOM had such cupboard and in there were about 100 small jig saw puzzles that were in the the style of stamps. They were very popular with the kids. Cheers.

Junior and infant schools are generally happy to have people visit the school and talk to the kids. I got involved when my mates daughter was a student teacher at the school on my delivery. Next thing, my kids teacher found out and asked me to talk to the kids in their school, and in time another couple of schools asked me. These days, I wouldn't speak to the kids about Royal Mail, but continue to talk to them about local history whenever I'm asked.postie28 wrote:do all schools have this people in the community scheme then ?. would happily get involved with this.

Whatever happened to Postman Pat Uniforms? A mate of mine used to go round schools in Postman Pat gear - a bit like those things on "It's A Knockout" - with Stuart Hall - he had a minder with him because he couldn't actually see out of it too well and it was a bit cumbersome - he would do the waddling about whilst the other bloke extolled the virtues of life at Royal Mail.
I wonder why they dropped that programme? It was a really good laugh on a Saturday night - better than Ant & Decs Saturday Night Out.
