PO HomePhone and Broadband
Has anyone tried the PO homePhone/Broadband or has it just started ?. Got the leaflet in with the payslip it looks like a reasonable deal. The price on the web page differers from the leaflet a bit on the package but the overall price appears fair, with our discount

Already get my homephone through p.o and have done for a while..bit loathed to switch broadband as earlier last year i watched watchdog do a survey of all leading broadband providers..(speed,value for money, customer service etc)and post office were simply shocking..bottom of the heap for customer service so i've never entertained the idea..but they might have cleaned up thier act by now..

if you aint payin..the mails stayin!!!

I've had the Homephone for just over a year now. It does work out a bit cheaper than BT - especially if you get the £50 discount for the first year. Also UK calls after 1900 m-f, and all weekend are free now, and if you call another homephone number the first 3 minutes are free at any time.
Only problem I've had is that they keep charging me £4.50p each quarter for caller ID which I don't have. Every time I get a bill I ring them to tell them I don't have it, and every time I am told they will take it off future bills and I will get a refund. Hasn't happened yet so I await the next bill to see if they have done anything about it. So maybe their customer service isn't too good.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Yes, we do get a discount.
Firstly we get 3 months free service, and secondly we get the better package, for the price of the lower package. I think the only difference is unlimited downloads instead of 5GB, so good for those who download lots of music etc, but I think I'll be well within the 5GB anyway.

post office broadband
I signed up to homephone and broadband on 5/11/07. Initial broadband 'go live' date 20/11/07. I assume my phone is now with PO. On 20/11/07 a BT van went down the road my broadband dropped out for a minute then came back, no problems connecting (so I thought) even using old username and password (very lucky as my free wireless router with all the settings on had not arrived). The following evening I had a message. They said I had given them the wrong MAC code. I phoned my 'old' ISP who again emailed me the exact same code (generated again, but as less then 30 days old it was identical) telling me that the MAC code system had been updated 4 months before and maybe the PO hadn't kept up (as I use SAP at work I can believe it). I phone PO again and told them the code was correct and they told me they would try again on 29/11/07 (today.) On 22/11/07 the router arrived (a netgear DG834.) In the meantime I have given out my new post office email address to everybody. Most of the time I get an error when logging into it and it is webmail. As I didn't like the address they gave me I added two more easier ones. Only to find I can't access those addresses, but it gives me two new ways of logging into my broadband account???? So today nothing has happened. As my old ISP are billing me tomorrow I might as well wait 2 weeks or I will end up paying twice. I have phoned them and apparently the 1st order was cancelled and the 2nd order was mistakenly ignored.
PROS: Home phone OK. Friendly call centre staff (obviously in Ireland.) Good quality router. Cheap (talk talk cheaper but some poor reviews)
CONS: Long waits to phone call centre (so far 20, 26 and 55 minutes thankfully I kept hold of the freephone number and didn't use the 0845.) still not connected.
I hope these are 'teething troubles' another colleague has transfered and says its OK.
Just had a thought maybe the reason Mr Crozier didn't make it to those talks was that he signed up to this broadband package too.

I don't know why you'd go with PO - I have mine with Sky - I have a full sky package, 8 meg connection for £5, and unlimited land line calls another £5. The connection is excellent - much better than BT - strange because it's the same line, same exchange and £22.50 cheaper. I have to pay BT for the line but I don't begrudge them that because I save so much overall.

I'm finally connected now.
I was given a go live date of the 21st November as confirmed when placing the order, and in a subsequent letter.
So, on the 21st, I set up everything, and it wouldn't connect. I tried to get through to customer services, and after a long wait of an hour I hung up, and gave up.
The following day, still nothing, and set the phone going, whilst I watched TV. They answered after 10 minutes, then told me my go live date was the 26th!! I told them it was unacceptable that I should be given in writing the 21st, when that clearly wasn't true.
So plugged virgin back in, and used that till the 26th. Did manage to connect with no problems, and stress free surfing for the last few days. If they had given me the correct date to start with, then I'd be totally happy with the service.

SKY VS POST OFFICE BROADBAND
I looked into the sky deal but it didn't seam cheap. You only get broadband if you pay for their TV also which works out at £30 for 2mb with a 40gb cap inc line rental. Most channels I ever watched on sky are on freeview and with a 400gb topfield pvr you can't beat it. I was paying £20 for 8mb with a 20gb cap on F2S.com and in the early hours it was unmetered now you even get 500mins of free calls (previously I used 18866.com). They are great but I need to save some money to top up my 'Maxwelled' pension.
