Headphones banned

It was announced during our WTL today that we can no longer wear headphones on our round, due to H&S. I like to listen to the radio, Radio 4 or talksport normally, so no loud music. This is the one bit of enjoyment I have left whilst doing this job.

We're allowed to use headphones but one ear only so you can still hear traffic etc, this was confirmed a few weeks ago. I don't bother though, haven't for years.

Is there a company wide policy on this??
My radio is all that keeps me sane in the d.o
I can't bear listening to the same voices day in day out....
Not such a worry out on delivery as I shall buy a nice dab with speaker fitted....

what i'm getting at is there must some posties out there who have hearing disabilltiy how do they hear traffic coming, and what about if the said traffic is a Toyota prius?

But they don't have the distraction of noise/music which may reduce situational awareness.

I can't concentrate enough to cross the road with earphones in, never mind read addresses, look for house numbers, avoid dogs crap etc. Also talking to customers, and image! It just doesn't look good, and sends out the wrong signals.

For once I think Royal Mail are doing something right banning them.

Some guys used to cut about with them in when sorting and it's no longer allowed. Nothing said about wearing them when outside though.

I used to do it when i started but certain streets ruined some songs for me haha. Any time i'd hear it out of work i'd be reminded of scummy flats or the annoying woman at no.54

I'm neither for or against wearing headphones I wear them occasionally, but people are killed in accidents when wearing headphones.

Sticking your headphones on and listening to a few tunes while walking around is always a more appealing prospect than being faced with all the noise of the world.

However, there could be some fatal side effects.

The number of pedestrians killed or injured while wearing headphones has grown in the US from 16 in 2004 to 47 in 2011, bringing the total number of cases in that period to 116.

The research, which was published in the British Journal of Injury Prevention, also found that over half of the incidents involved pedestrians who were run down by trains and two thirds of the victims overall, were males under 30.

The paper, which was headed by Richard Lichenstein of University of Maryland, Baltimore, warned that wearing headphones leads to a lack of awareness of your surroundings and lowers the resources the brain devotes to external stimuli.
