Vehicle Telemetry

Hi all,
We were informed yesterday at our Wort Time Lying session that our vehicles would soon be installed with Vehicle Telemetry devices and that the info would be used to "improve our driving" etc.

Has anyone any information on Vehicle Telemetry and has this been installed in any other offices? If so, how did it go?
I would like as much info on this as possible please.

I did a search on the CWU Website and found the following:-

The CWU has agreed to a 40 week trial in the Bradford area.

At the moment, every vehicle at my depot, in the SW, is currently having these devices or similar ones installed. I wonder how much this is costing? The supplier of the devices, I understand, is an American-based, international company called "Astrata".

Here is the link to their homepage. It's amazing just how much data is available, in realtime and retrospectivley from each vehicle.

The same thing is happening at Macclesfield do. The telemetry will be studied by managers and if your driving is not up to standard you will be "invited" to a 121 with the manager.This begs the question who decides what is an acceptable standard of driving, and how long will it be before drivers are being taken down the conduct code.It is nothing more than a mandate for managerial bullying.

You can guaratee that if you go off route without permission or a good reason, you will end up with a stage 1.

Hi,yeh i mentioned this subject in the introduction area(think was wrong area for me ),is a worry for sure.we are having them fitted at the moment and the union have said that it is to check our driving skills etc and can see where we are at anytime,apparently RM will bring it in anyway without consoltation...hmmm,must be costing a fortune,but dont worry about our wages eh...

The trial in Watford was in 2005. I would be interested in anyone from Watford who has seen this thing in action, of thier oppinions.

Like you say, RM will know exactly where the vechile is at any given time. They will also have details about your driving, MPG, Hard driving etc.etc. The particular example our manager used was hard breaking. It was questioned, how can you see what the driver breaked hard for? It could have been a genuine emergency i.e. a dog ran out etc but when you get back the office, is the manager going to believe why you breaked hard or are they just going to say your driving is not up to standard and you need retraining!

This system also involves a Risk assesment of the Driver which can take upto 2 hrs where the drivers gen knowledge and hazard perception will be reviewed and each driver will be given a risk rating!

I have taken my driving test and changeover so why the hell should I take another test now to prove I can drive???????

In another job I had before RM, we had trackers in the vans (were carrying valuable stuff so the expense was justified). They were fine as long as we were doing our jobs and driving properly, and if we got caught in traffic and were late there was no argument about where we'd been because they knew it wasn't our fault and we'd been tracked moving slowly on the road all the time. Maybe we had to be a bit more careful about speeding than we otherwise might have been but that's not really a problem unless there's a great deal of time pressure on a job. Then the tracking system is good, because the manager will have to pay you more if it takes longer than he thought it would, and he can see you're right when you say he was being overoptimistic on the journey time. I think the trackers have got cheaper now and I wouldn't worry about having one in RM. They also make vehicle insurance cheaper, so would be a legitimate and sensible way for RM to save on costs. And that is something to be encouraged I think.

If your driving skills are questioned, drive slowly, amoothly and carefully. The job may take longer if you do that. Make sure you are paid for any extra time you take. Remember, everyone else will now be driving to the same standard. I'm sure the management will have allowed for that possibility in their cost/saving assessment of the introduction of vehicle tracking.

I put your question to sherlock holmes (bet you already worked out where this is going) and he said it's TELEMETRY my dear watson. which i found strange as my names jaffer!!

I spoke to a mechanic today who has been fitting these "trackers". He reckons that it is costing Â£500 per vehicle to fit these things AND Â£28 per month, per vehicle to run. I found out the following info on the Internet....."Royal Mail has a fleet of over 30 000 vehicles".

SO..., 30 000xÂ£500=Â£15million. 30 000x(Â£28x12)=Â£10million & eighty thousand. Total cost for the first year, including fitting = Â£25million and eighty thousand!!!!!!!

That seems a hell of a lot of money to spend on vans BUT,,,,,,, just remember that Â£40million has just recently been spent on bosses bonuses!!!!

I hope that somebody who is "in the know" will correct me if I'm wrong with this info but if I'm right, that means that RM has spent over Â£65million on bosses and vans in the last couple of months! All this.....and they say they have NO money for a decent pay rise and when the pension fund is Â£6.5BILLION in deficit.

I smell a rat!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure that a Romec guy or someone like that has said on here that they cost Â£28.00 each TO FIT.
