Hi I am a regular on Postmanchat so I thought I would give this a blast!! Just getting a different view on things around the Country!

Hello and Welcome plodding Postie !
Seniority - well it's not perfect, but it's better than having the managers give the
better jobs and Annual leave to their mates, the blue-eyed boys, the a**elickers,
and strike breakers.

here here totally agree and most managers i know prefer the senority system the business run as it cuts out a lot of potential grief in there office

just to correct my colleague i dont think leave can be issued on senority every year if im wrong i apologise in advance

Yes you're right. It is now supposed to be rotated on a three year basis.
But what happens if we get these teamleaders who among other things
are supposed to allocate annual leave among 'their team'.

Incidentally seniority was originally introduced by Royal Mail about 150 years ago.
in the 1860's I think, to end corruption in the allocation of duties.

Yes, I think its fair; most (all?) jobs we do at royal mail are easy, anyone can do them, so the only fair way to allocate them would be based on something like seniority.

100% it is fair. I have only done 4 years and I fully support it. Its the fairest way and its a good incentive to stick it out. Also there is the reverse side of it if you did not have seniority and you had a new starter on an easy duty and a Senior man on a banger how would that he fair, and how could you see if the new starter was going to cut it.

As we say in the forces "Get some time in", what it means is that the longer you have been the more you know, the more you are trusted. appreciated and valued by others junior to you. If seniority were to go how do you stop nepotism and favoritism and even as our Seniorman pointed out Corruption.

Alright its not perfect but then no system is and anything that replaces it will have to have a lot of safeguards.

Yes it is accepted by most people as the fairest way to allocate duties.
If they were allocated by managers there would be loads of complaints and probably
ET cases, claiming discrimination on age, gender, disability, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
Some managers have already taken out cases against RM when they have been turned
down for a promotion or job they were after.

the most fair way is seniority we have such biased and friend orientated managers i'd be at the bottom instead of on the top if we didn't have it has to be the best practice (to coin a royal mail phrase)

Easy?so a 56 year old can do a 4 hour long walk with 8-9 bags a day.

The whole idea of seniority is to prevent arguments but it also has the result of giving older guys the chance to take it a bit easier,the alternative probably meaning retirement and dependency on the state.

Yes it's fair, you got to have something look forward to, the jobs hard enough without having favorites getting all the good jobs, with seniority everyoner knows where they stand, I can't do the town rounds as quickly as I could 10 or 15 years ago.

Not in my case I am 45+ but have only 5 years in. There is a guy at my DO who started from school and has know done 14 years and is just over 30 so despite what Royal Mail say it does not favour the older works, but the most loyal workers, as it should.
