Nasty!
Hi Comrades,
We had a strange situation occur today.
A leave reserve came into work to find that he had been moved onto another delivery. (Remember that today was a proposed day of industrial action.) The reason for this was that another postie wished to work overtime, having found out (on the day before his day off) that the strike for delivery staff had been cancelled. (I hope you're following this.) The latter Postie then insisted on doing his own duty. The postie who was then due to do his duty was put on something that she did not know and then the leave reserve was moved from his pre-arranged duty to do a bastard of a delivery.
This is the standard of management in Royal Mail. They will reward people who commit themselves to coming in when they discover that a strike has been suspended and don't give a s**t about anyone else.
Keep the red flag flying Comrades.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Leave reserves
Yep gottcha this sort of thing used to happen in our office but the union rep put an end to it. On a posties day off that delivery is not his it belongs to the reserve, and therefore He/She should not have to move but the regular postie should have done the so called bastard of a delivery. But this only applies if your leave reserve had this delivery in her rotation .Catch my drift.

We've had examples of people being asked to come in on a particular duty on overtime and having accepted it, have had the duty changed when they came in. In one particular case the postie concerned refused to do the adjusted duty because it hadn't been prepped and went home.
I have always made it clear before going in on a day off that I will do the duty arranged but no other, and would rather have a day off than struggle with a duty I am not familiar with.

If they're deep in doo doo the last thing they need is someone coming in on overtime refusing to once they find out they're on a walk they don't know or don't like. So it suits them to keep that person sweet and s**t on the reserve, who can't refuse a duty as they don't have their own.
Think my office had something like 20 walks to cover today. If that's the case at a lot of offices they'll use any underhanded tactic to make sure they're covered.
Also seems to be common practice to put the new starters/casuals on the really nasty deliveries. With the limited, if any, training given nowadays, this sink or swim attitude doesn't make any sense. You're more likely to get someone wanting to stay in the job if they're gently introduced to what a nasty delivery can be like.

Dutys
I fully agree, my day off was today, and that was pre-arranged because I thought we were on strike as I have my daughter some weekends, I was told yesterday that they were in the keck at my office and I said I would come in as I'm only on 24 hours a week and could do with the money, and they tried to give me the crap rounds that everyone hates, I just simply said my round and another with no packets or I'm going home, risky it seems for somebody who hasnt been there that long but If you let people walk over you once they will do it again.

I usually get a text (I won't answer my phone to them) telling me I'm being moved but I normally don't care (unless it's one of the duties I hate). It's normally the usual scab/suck asses who insist on doing their own duties because they are so thick they can't cope with anything other than what they know.

I'll only work my off day on my walk, but when asked by the boss if I'll come in I go straight to the cover guy and ask if he is ok with it. He is usually but if he says no then I won't come in. However the cover guy is union rep so the boss only needs me to come in if he has been released so usually no problems as all. Refuse to do IPS though and only claim 6 hrs. for the walk.

Thats the norm in our office , The reserves and spares get kicked all over the place to suit the walk holders . I have prepped D2D for my next days work after looking at the duty sheet only to get moved when I came in the next morning
Manager even went down the road of putting me " spare " all week then telling me when I came in that this was my day off and I shouldn`t have been in . . . . . . .
Anytime I questioned this I was told thats what happens when you are the last person in , length of service seems to come before everything

People in my office get moved off the duty they HOLD all the time, due to sick leave and the reserves not knowing nearly enough duties as they should for the D.O to operate properly. If Al and Adam werent so greedy then we migth have some money to train the reserves up! I know too many duties in the office for my own good as over the last 14 years since i moved from cadet to fully fledged postman i have reguarly changed groups/duties as duties/groups become vacant leading me to know many deliveries well enough to the deliver work but the prep side is a nightmare on a unfamilar frame.
That said if i am in my day off then i dont belive i have the right to pick and chose which duty i want to do.
On my day off the floater holds my duty and not me!
Moves should only be due to operational need and you should be fully trained for the outdoor element of the duty in the intrests of health and safety.

I maybe a bit slow on the uptake but our cover duties are regular duties made up of five other duties on rotation as per the day off - although there are exceptions the rotated day is their duty for that day and cannot be moved except by agreement.
If the holder of the duty for five days wishes to come in on his or her day off then it is to do whatever is necessary NOT their regular duty. Private arrangements are made but they are just that.

Its the same as my place,i'm rest day cover,if my regular on his day off comes in,then he aint gonna knock me off.
As for the reserves,if they are on the duty for the week the same applies.
I think a lot of this depends on the Dum in charge, and how clued up the rep/staff are.
