Thinning out

Post by cityfc »

Can someone answer the following please.

If we believe we will be late back because of workload ,we have been told by manager to thin out mail,is this wilfull delay of mail? and if so should this be reported to the regulators?

Can we be subject to disciplinary action if we refuse to thin out?

Would we be correct in cutting off because we have ran out of time?

if you thin out ,when would you do what was left? surely that would make things worse for the following day.If you feel you cant complete your duty imform your lino and let him make the descision. Yes you can cut off , you only have to work your "8 hours"
I bet no dom has ever been done for wilful delay :left: :left: :left:

Yes I realise we can cut off.
The point I am trying to make is where does the order to "Thin out" come from, and are we not breaking delivery rules set by the regulators.
If we refuse to thin out and cut off instead, what are the consequeces?,as surely it is an unlawful order to thin out.

Thinning out has been part of RM for at least 35 years I`ve been in, the problem nowadays and why you don`t hear it much, is we delver so much and to so many calls , it wont make any differance. Hence why you nowadays hear "cut off" all the time , as it is the only way to make a delivery viable in the time allowed.

But we are being told to thin the mail, and that must be against the rules set by the regulator.
Where in any agreement does it state we can thin mail?
If it came to any disciplinary for not delivering the mail,ie:thinning,we are the ones who would be conduct coded not the manager,so should they put it in writing to cover ourselves?

Make sure that you have a colleague/Rep witness the instruction to "Thin Out" so you are covered, and it also helps to let others know what you are doing, they may want to do it too...

willful delay only applies to OPGs

any mail not delivered by rm managers for any reason is deemed operational difficulties

we did it at christmas when we were told to leave behind some mech and the rivals mail sort. all franked and stamped mail was given priority. as long as you are getting your instructions from your lino or DOM with plenty of witnesses it shouldn't be a problem. i think i'm right in saying its a way round 'cutting off' and is not counted as such hence your DOM won't get into trouble?

Going to a house with one letter takes the same time as going with three letters. So why don't you just thin out the last bit of your walk ,ie leave it all in the fitting :cool

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
