I've heard if you don't do overtime for Royal Mail then there is a chance you get fired? Is this true because it's gonna dictate whether I'm gonna do it or not.
Advice appreciated
Thanks

Re: Overtime?
Yes its true...dont forget that you are on call 24 hours a day so if they need you in the middle of the night you have to go in or you will be fired. You cant leave work until they say you can go either so theres a chance you may have to live in a small cubicle at the office for up to 7 days straight with no food or water.
But just think of the money you will be earning!

Re: Overtime?
It depends on whether you've signed a Scheduled Attendance (S/A) Contract or not. Normal (pressure) overtime is purely voluntary. You're under no obligaton to do any, regarless of any scare tactics your Manager might want to try.geoffxxuk wrote:I've heard if you don't do overtime for Royal Mail then there is a chance you get fired? If you have an S/A Contract, then that IS compulsary. But the penalty for failing to perform S/A is an overtime ban (the length varies on a sliding scale). At least that's the agreement with the Union. I don't know whether any changes have been brought in at your ofice. But even if they have. It would be illegal to sack you, without going through the Conduct Code. So, as long as your record is currently clear. The worst you could expect, is to be taken into the Manager's Office, for a "Councelling". And remember: Even that's only possible, if you breach an S/A contract. pressure overtime is always purely voluntary!
If you're in the Union. I strongly suggest that you get your Rep involved ASAP. Because you're Manager has no right to attempt to force you into doing overtime.

Re: Overtime?
Says in my original contract (2000) that I can be made to work extra hours when required. I assume this was a standard clause at the time. I've always taken the view that it couldn't be enforced in practice.
On the other hand....

I think some of these people work in our mail centre. Years ago such people lived in asylums but it's all care in the community nowadays. I understand they are forbidden to lie down on top of the sorting frames on H & S grounds.pickaname wrote:Yes its true...dont forget that you are on call 24 hours a day so if they need you in the middle of the night you have to go in or you will be fired. Re: Overtime?
Depends, they could constructively dismiss you yes. But not because of overtime. If you do your job right and do not cut any corners they'll be hard pushed to get you :)geoffxxuk wrote:I've heard if you don't do overtime for Royal Mail then there is a chance you get fired? Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
