Van sharing for deliveries

Post by wolfie citizen smith »

Starburst or whatever you want to call it...

If as I have hurd, RM are scopping whether a group of posties can go out in one van to deliver an area... this will include, the post, the specials and the large packet. i.e the hole shabang for that area and the driver then takes the van home, then brings it in to work the next day, to which the cycle starts again.

Has anyone have any knowledge of this ?????????????

The reason why I ask is that if this process is agreed, then has the van driver holder been made aware that the van they are driving and taking home would be liable to PAY extra TAX out of there WAGES due to the fact that they are now using the van for company use to and from the home i.e a company car/van or has RM made a special deal with the INLAND REVENUE :hmmmm

if you say it is not true then it is not true and I have no reason to disbelieve you.

I would just like to say I would dig deeper regarding the rules on agreeing to have a company car/van outside of hours outside your home

If a vehicle is taken home on a regular basis then it does fall into company car tax rules but the park and loop system would mean the vehicle returns to the office everyday with the returns.

As far as Tax goes

There is a tax charge where, because of their employment, a van is made available to a director or an employee earning £8,500 a year or more, or to a member of their family or household, and the van is actually used privately (a ‘company van’; until 2004/05, a van which is available for private use, whether or not any actual use is made of it).

From 2007/08, there is a further tax charge if free or subsidised fuel is provided for private use in a company van

and unless Royalmail are going to let us use the vans for personal use then there is nothing to worry about,

Now i wonder how many DIMs are adving the taxman when they use the vans for personal use :Very Happy

you would only be liable for a tax payment if you used the vehicle for personal use (ie not commuting or not what royalmail pays us to do)

Company cars - guidance for employees

You will pay tax if a company car is made available to you for your private use (this includes commuting) or you are provided with free or subsidised fuel for private use in that car. The tax you pay is broadly determined by three factors:

* the list price of the car plus any accessories
* the CO2 emissions of the car, and
* the fuel type of the car.

In general, the benefit charge is lower for cleaner and cheaper cars. This is to encourage you and your employer to choose cars which are less damaging to the environment.

This page provides links to information to help you understand how the benefit charge is calculated.

so in that case if its not private use, then using the van on company time before your duty starts and after your duty finishes, then you must be entitled to some from of overtime payment ?

im reading the exact same website, look at the pages for vans not cars, unless royal mail are going to give us all company cars your link does not apply

You will pay tax on a company van made available to you for private use as follows:

until 5 April 2005, if it is available for private use (including commuting)
from 6 April 2005, only if you actually use it for private journeys other than commuting.
This page provides links to information to help you understand when tax will be charged if you use a company van and how the charge is calculated.

completely agree with you on this, if they want me to drive a van home and back to work, then i will start my duty time from when i open the door to the van!
