Ok so this thread probably should be on that board here, but just a reminder all forum members as to how the PO used to be and to bring back memories for some, here.

Re: The Good Old Days
I first started in 1981, but I do have a small break in service, and so I have just got another 14 years under my belt.
Believe me, those days, even the early 1980's, were good, IMHO.

In the video, is that train that goes under central london still in use ?
Just spilt stain-remover down my shirt. Now how do I get that out?

There is a article about the rail mail here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2940958.stm but I don't think it runs anymore (something to do with it being cheaper to run lorries around London
).

Re: The Good Old Days
No, the Mail Rail or Post Office Railway used to run for 6.5 miles under LondonThorby Bislam wrote:In the video, is that train that goes under central london still in use ?
from Paddington Rail Station in West london to Liverpool St Rail Station in East London,
with stops at Paddington MC, West Central MC, West 1 MC/DO, Mount Pleasant MC,
East Central (City of London) MC/DO, and Eastern MC.
It was closed about 5 years ago.
All the above offices have been closed except Mount Pleasant and West 1 DO,
and the Eastern MC has been moved from Whitechapel to Bow.
The trains shown were modified from those used in the mines.
There was a special train capable of carrying passengers which was once used for
a visit by the Queen.

Re: The Good Old Days
The closure meant a lot more RM vans/lorries on London's streets.
So much for 'Green' policies.
The tunnels are still there. There was some talk about them being used
to transport stock to shops along Oxford Street, but nothing came of it.
Tunnels under Mount Pleasant are sometimes used to store mail during
busy periods (and IA?).
They were used to store some works of art from the National Gallery during
WW2, and as air raid shelters for staff from the offices on the route.
