Info please for a new starter
I know a woman on my delivery at a firm who's husband started at royal Mail just before Xmas in Wilmslow. He says he likes it but has been told he has to use his car, & he says there are no pouch drop places & so takes up to 7 pouches out with him, & then told that they can't be on view!! Now I have been here 20 years & know that it is not right. she says because he is new, he can't say anything? Now I thought that if you haven't been given a bike for the round & its to far to walk, then you are given a lift out?? She says he likes it after working for Astra zeneca for 17 years, I said he may like it even better if he wasn't doing what he is doing?
Job & finish

Re: Info please for a new starter
The newest batch of starters were hired on the basis they used their private car on delivery despite there being boxes on the duties in question. I wonder if this is a recruitment policy. I was once asked to use mine but after requesting my insurance, MOT and petrol expenses all paid for the subject has never returned.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I can't believe the first 2 posts, surely Royal Mail cannot insist you use your own transport for all the usual obvoius reasons.

Re: Info please for a new starter
The problem with new starters is the HAVE to take all the s**t until their trial is over.
Once that is over then it's open season, where's the rep in all this, and his colleagues as well while we're here.

Using cars on delivery is purely voluntary and bloody stupid. This bloke should see his rep asap. It is up to RM to sort out his delivery and re-supply

AstraZeneca... remember it well! lol
He shouldn't be FORCED to use his car. There should be bag drops on his round if his round isn't allocated a van or someone should arrange to meet him at certain points to give him his mail otherwise.
I'd tell him to go see his union rep and take them into a meeting with the manager.

I agree, I had this sh1t when I was a new starter, 1988, it is Royal Mail's OFFICIAL policy and preference not to use cars or to plot duties based on using your cars.
However on the Shop floor, its a long way from Ivory Tower HQ and should anthing goes wrong and where nothing is written down, no Manger is to blame it will be the poor Postie getting shafted.

Re: Info please for a new starter
i was told ages ago now by a very nice manager that they are instructed, or were at least, to treat new entrants as blank sheets of paper.
Of course this is wrong, this man could do no worse than flagging this up with HQ. Herin lies the problem, if it was just what he was told it's his word against theirs, he needs witnesses or he needs it in black and white.
Similarly though HQ could approach the business on this, couldn't they?

I'm pretty bloody sure that 1 of the conditions of employment isn't, that you can have the job to deliver letters assuming you can get the correct insurance for your car.
Why not try saying his insurance company won't insure him, of course he'll be asked why? but the reply is simple , " i don't know they just said they won't"

Re: Info please for a new starter
Most insurers will not insure you for business use, really need a specialised insuruer and that will cost a lot more money than your average postie will be willing to pay, some insurers will allow some business use whilst working for Royal Mail as if we have the DOm sanction your car use then Royal Mail after seeing driving licence MOT and insurance road tax etc will insure the vehicle whilst being used on Royal Mail business but this is only 2rd party cover, damage your car and you have to get it fixed, There's too many hoops to jump through to do it legally so don't use your own car it's just not worth the hassle never mind the expense. Royal Mail has a fleet of around 45000 vehicles use them instead, don't worry the're not all LDV's
