I think we are in deep do do.
At our DO we have over 40 yorks of packets sitting there everyday that cannot be cleared. We asked our DOM to pay some docket to keep the back log down and he refused. Now he is asking all and sundry to work overtime to clear it. They are refusing now because of his earlier belligerent attitude towards them. On top of that about 20 yorks of lightbulbs turned up yesterday. All for housing association etc. We have been told the lightbulbs have to be cleared by 15th December. Totally impossible.
Question 1. Why at our busiest time of the year are senior management still looking to cut expenditure. When every other industry is investing in more staff to relieve XMAS pressure? Its our busiest time of the year for crissakes.
Question 2. What is the business doing buying in this lightbulb business? Nobody wants them, no one can carry them alongside their normal packets. It stupid.
My message is work something out here because this is going to get worse. The public are paying for a service we cannot provide. And yes I know RM have been on a drive to cut costs. But lets argue about that after XMAS. Fancy walking into a pub, paying for a pint and being told it will be with you in the next couple of days. Go to a restaurant order a meal and simply not get it. We have recorded deliverys sitting there 5-6 days old. We are scamming the public here.
Get your act together the pair of you and work something out. You are sitting in your offices away from the action. You have not got a clue what it is like on the floor now. This is our busiest and potentially most profitable time of the year and you simply think that after all the cuts and revisions we can clear all the work thats coming in. Frankly I am embarrased at the moment to work for RM.

A message to both RM and CWU.
I worked in retail for nearly 30 years, most of that time in management and the fact as you said was that businesses invest in their busiest time. No matter how the other 10 months went, December and January were make or break time for retail business and many only went into profit in the last month of their trading year.
Our biggest trading period is now in full swing and won't relax much even after Christmas, yet RM seem to think we will cope. WRONG!!!! Most of the staff are now dying on their feet through cuts in manpower and additional duties and are starting to realise that to preserve their health and well being they must resist unreasonable pressure.
RM'S policy of staffing for the quietest periods and hoping people will act like machines when you press the "go faster" button is a failure. Now we are busy (and to be honest I can't remember when we weren't) there is no more than a minimum of experienced people left to cope and it is obvious from reports on this site that the wheels are coming off.
Mail volumes didn't fall as predicted - they changed in character and are now more difficult to handle - huge volumes of internet trade and in my office for example unbelievable amounts of plastic wrap magazines, brochures and catalogues.
By the way - do you all remember RM telling us all that the internet was our biggest threat - they were right - we can't cope with all the extra business it has brought.
This is no time for faint hearts - we know that our customers rely on us and for once in the year we will be delivering things (not light bulbs !), like cards, presents and family messages that people are looking forward to receiving.
Put the pressure on the managers to solve the problems and spend the budget - get your reps involved and make them see sense about what the public and the workforce needs and stop them saving money to boost their bonuses.
Speculate to accumulate. Happy Christmas everybody.

Spot on.
I have only worked for Royal Mail for six and half years ,but in that time have seen people come and go and the most interesting ones are people like yourself who come from a retail background and who are aghast at how the company runs.
One chap who was with us for a short while was trying to sort out funding for an invention of his and had taken the postie job on short term.
He was not short of a brain cell or two and would argue with the management on the whole operation , they in turn resented him for being right and he eventually buggered off.
One of his observations that was quite popular was the comment that d2ds dilute Royal Mails good name , i.e. you ,as a customer, see you postie come to the door and what has he given?, a load of crap.
Last Christmas we went two days with no packets being delivered ,due to short staffing, and when the customer eventually got their packet they had sometimes reordered because they thought their packets would not turn up.
The whole operation is run on the chaos theory i.e due to an infinite amount of variables somehow and some when you will receive your letter/packet.
We do not need or want to be privatised to make us a more efficient operation ,we just need a descent management who realise that we are a service and just what a service is and that we run on different rules to a business.

Yesterdays Telegraph had an item which stated that internet sales over the Christmas period are expected to rise at least 10%.
That will be 10% more pressies the general public will be wondering" where the hell are they !!".

Play.com, Amazon all on Sky News employing more staff to cope with Christams pressure. RM putting on more collections to cope with increase in mail. And what does our dim DOM say. "Sorry can t pay extended delivery you should be able to cope. " WHEN are we going to have a managemet that sits down in October and budgets sensibly for the xmas period. So the staff all know where they stand come November/December. Its so amateurish its frightening.
