royal mail cover 3rd party only for use of car.
Recently at my office we have been told to bring in insurance, mot, licence so we can then give a letter to our insurance company. I rang up my insurance company and if you use your car on delivery you are only covered 3rd party which means only the other car is covered for damages not yours. Not only this but if someone broke into, set your car on fire ect you wouldnt get a penny, Why cant royalmail cover 3rd party fire and theft just doesnt make sense to me. And before you all start saying dont use your car on delivery if this isnt sorted out I will be joining the van brigade.

I believe you are just meant to drive to the start of your walk, with your first bag. So after you are parked, and have taken out your first bag, are you saying your own insurance doesn't cover you? Surely you'd be covered, just as you would be if you were visiting a friend there, or sat in the pub?dohnut wrote: if someone broke into, set your car on fire ect you wouldnt get a penny

Probably not, 3rd party is usually Social, Domestic or pleasure. If your insurance company asks (which they will) what you doing at the time of the claim and you tell them you were carrying mail to the first box or whatever, in other words working, you may well not be insured, in fact probably wouldn't be. Equally of course a police officer could find out you were working while driving and your insurance doesn't cover you, in other words you were driving without insurance.

There is an easy solution to this insurance debate:
DON'T USE YOUR CAR TO TRANSPORT YOURSELF OR MAIL TO YOUR DELIVERY!!

Even Royal Mail don't want you to use your car, your manager probably does, because it helps him out - Royal Mail however feel that by using your car they lose control of your time and that is the new coin. K has absolutely the right idea.k66yla wrote:There is an easy solution to this insurance debate:

Royal Mail Private Cars on Delivery Policy
Guidance Notes:
1. Extent of Cover:
Cover has now been extended to cover the employee should they have to move their vehicle from the first point along the delivery route.
2. Moving the vehicle along the route – insurance cover:
The precise definition of business use varies with each insurer. Some insurers class moving along the route as a higher class of business use (courier use). Employees should not rely on the fact that a colleague’s insurer allows this, as all insurers will differ. Where movement along the route is excluded employees will need to bear this in mind if choosing to move their vehicles along the route. If the individual opts to extend their insurance to include business use then it is essential they seek assurance from their insurers that they are able to move the vehicle along the delivery route.
3. Moving the vehicle along the route – making drops:
Whilst movement of the vehicle along the route is now covered, delivery should still be made on foot and not by using the car as a means for moving from one delivery point to the next.
4. Business Use:
In the event that the employee’s insurance does not cover business use, then the employee will be covered by the business policy, for third party only.
5. Third Party Cover:
The business policy is for Third Party only and all claims whilst using the business policy will be dealt with as such. This means that the cost of any damage to an employee’s car will not be covered by the policy whether caused by the employee or another road user. Royal Mail will only cover the cost of the repairs to the third party. Where the employees private policy is extended to include business use the private insurer should handle the claim for damages to the employee’s vehicle.
Oh before I forget it is our CWU union policy not to use private cars on delivery in fact our health and safety department want a total ban put in place, and quite right to. Dohnut you should be a member of the van brigade already.
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

why anybody would want to use their own car, pay for their own petrol, pay for their own wear and tear, pay for their own tyres etc. when there are perfectly good red vans available is beyond me.
if the vans arent available it is your managers responsibility to get you to and from and along your delivery not yours, if you have to wait a couple of hours in the office waiting for transport why worry you are getting paid for it and then if your duty time is up before you have time to deliver any/much mail dont worry it isn't your problem, managers get paid a hell of a lot more than you to worry about it, let them sort it out.
